LACs that aren’t super liberal or preppy

Anonymous
Off topic and I have not researched the topic, but I thought it was generally very hard to transfer to a LAC, particularly after a single semester. Are you talking about dropping out and then reapplying for freshman admissions?

Back to topic, I would think that Davidson seems about right socially. My kid thought it was pretty chill when visiting.

Apparently some people prefer antisocial injustice.

No, some people recognize that some SJW tactics are antisocial. You can agree with the message and work for social justice, and also not want to be anywhere near some of the messengers whose behavior you find counterproductive to the cause.

This. It is a misconception that you have to be an "SJW" (shouting down anyone who disagrees with you, demanding your college cancel classes until it meets your demands, protesting a bakery they tried to protect themselves from your classmates' shoplifting, etc.) to care about social justice. I care deeply about social justice and working towards a more just society -- I just cringe at the tactics of say, the average Oberlin student, as a way to get there.

What are the tactics of an average Oberlin student? I went to Wesleyan and I would say that the average student is not what the stereotype is so I wonder if you are referring to a small portion of the Oberlin student body.

this is probably what pp is referring to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson%27s_Bakery_v._Oberlin_College

My child is a senior at Oberlin and is not a SJW type. She's typical college liberal but not really political. Her friends are all the same. The bakery thing is WAY overblown by people who have nothing to do with Oberlin. Also this event happened before any of the current students were at the school. I agree with the Wes alum above who says the average student is not the stereotype.

Union in NY is middle-of-the-road politically and not super-preppy, at least by preppy LAC standards.

Preppy AF but still overwhelmingly liberal. A strange combination.

Do you think those Skidmore students who demanded the college to fire the art professor for observing a pro-cop rally need help, like therapy?

You're gat dang right they need therapy. But since the social media blue checks who set the parameters of our national discussion think like they do, they'll get affirmation and capitulation instead. Honest, candid discussions, in which all participants feel welcome to submit their thoughts to an open marketplace of ideas, are becoming a thing of the past in the public sphere, particularly on college campuses.

Her child just might not want an extreme environment. Some people don't feel.comfortable in one and that's ok. I'm liberal but went to a school that had SJWs before they were called that but they are extreme folks. It was only a segment of an otherwise predominantly liberal school so I didn't care but someone else might. Preppy might not feel right either.

I don't think anyone needs therapy based solely on not liking extremists and preps.

I hear Union College in Schenectady, NY, is lit. Might be a good place to look for OP's daughter.

I am an Oberlin alum and have been involved in my alumni group in each city I’ve lived in and was on each alumni conference calll held with the Board and the President for the last several years regarding the Gibson’s case. I absolutely agree that the school’s PR team has tried to paint everything as “overblown” regarding the Gibson’s issue but you have alum from 30 to 90 years old on these calls and interacting privately with the president’s and alumni offices and the board offering better advise and being aghast at the college’s official stance. Alumni are alarmed at the falling stature of the school. But yes- the school
definitely wants to ignore the Gibson’s case.

How liberal is Bates compared to Skidmore?

I’d choose Skidmore. Less isolated, nice town, easier to get secure internships in business (NYC) and gov (Albany) or
the arts (SPAC).

But Bates has the NESCAC designation, which helps.

Help how, exactly? That’s not helpful without more information.
