I think you mean exacerbated. People are rightfully exasperated that schools are the last thing to open. |
Opening schools isn't going to solve this problem, but European experts consider these side effects of school closures to be valid concerns and arguments to keep schools open. They are considered an integral part of the social safety net. Americans resort to the excuse that we are asking too much of schools. I'm sure there are calls to privatize those functions instead. |
+1. Europeans probably fund schools better than we do in this country. We've been disinvesting in the public education system for a looooooooooonnnnnnnng time. |
Exactly. We need to reopen for students. |
But I read on this here board that some people don’t make good choices for their families. That in Europe attendance is required (no virtual option just cause people are scared/don’t want to send kids) and that should be replicated here. So it appears some people posting here for schools to open want to force their choice on everyone. |
How do kids get to/from school in Europe? In most places school buses are being used here in the States and people aren’t realizing in DC we have kids who are needing to Metro to and from as well as access the bus. |
Congratulations, this is the biggest overreach to try to find reasons to not reopen. |
Thanks for the info. If 2 kids in 2 different classes each get covid about a week and a half apart, due to going out to eat or traveling to visit family, I wouldn’t be worried. |
public transport use would go up as parents would need to ride with and then without their kids metro is also not running like normal so the people who need it the most will be hurt the most some families leave their homes at 6:30 to get across town on the bus - be grateful that isn't you (this also means they get home at 7 and kids go straight to bed) now they would have to leave even earlier and stand in the cold longer for waiting for the bus to get to school for in person so you can have daycare for your kids |

12 dcps staff now are covid positive and 10 are in quarantine
i would love to know what the percentage is the pos rate in dc is now up to 4% and is going to go up we are going to need to lock down and it makes me so sad |
| wait now for the 2,000 examples of Europe where everyone has healthcare but not one example of the US except for private schools where people pay to have small classrooms and sign contracts to adhere to covid rules (and no public transport either) |
I'm very sorry for the position you're in and that you're terrified, but my husband is a ER doctor who treats patients in the hospital with COVID. I assume you think he should keep going to work? The fact that you are now anti-in person learning because you personally got COVID is too bad, but not particularly relevant to the overall societal calculus. Europe has made the right call. Yes, schools; no, restaurants & bars. The priorities in this country are just sad. |
Most of those DCPS staff probably saw their families for Thanskgiving (or engaged in other small to medium sized social gatherings) or ate out at restaurants, just like most people in DC who are currently getting COVID. The percentage of positives in DCPS staff right now is meaningless w/o any evidence of in person transmission (or even, to start with, a break down of how many of those cases even *could* represent in person transmission; are those 12 staff in 12 different schools or 12 staff members in one school, for example?) |
You must not read the threads. This exact quote was posted by someone. Maybe they were a troll. But that is what they said. People should not be allowed to stay at home (like Germany). Parents should not get a choice. |
Yes, how ridiculous it is to say that parents should not get a choice of whether to return in person... Oh wait. |
