Ok. Enjoy four more years of Trump who supports the rise of groups like the Proud Boys (a racist and mysogynistic group). Let's hope they decide that Asians are exempted from their bigotry and misogyny. SMH.

Republicans are generally strongly in favor of charter schools because they draw away from public schools and offer "school choice" to their constituents.

THis lottery sounds awesome! The current system seems broken and unworkable at least this one seems fair to everyone.

How self-involved do you have to be to base your vote on access to one specialized high school in one of the strongest public and private school environments in the country, when you have a malevolent psychopathic authoritarian president running around enabling white supremacists and burning down the foundations of American democracy?

I'm ever more convinced that the comments on this board are the best evidence that some of these families need to learn what it means to exist in spaces with people who don't look like them. If today's TJ students are being raised by these people, they can't be sent into the world without being exposed to differing perspectives. The racist parents of today will beget the racist doctors, inventors, and engineers of tomorrow.

This is about more than just one school. The dismantling of meritocracy is the beginning of communism. I am not exaggerating. You wouldn't understand if you've never lived it. I have, and I wish you could understand that it's better to have a racist, misogynistic, despicable leader like Trump in office than to have a communist system, which is where we'd be headed with Biden.

DP. You don't realize it's you who are the racist here. You only look at TJ on one attribute, race. You don't look at them as a diverse group of thriving students who will contribute greatly to this country. Since you are in the majority, you have the power to put them into their rightful place. Unfortunately the Asian minority doesn't have political power or connections to fight this racism. All they have is their votes. It won't matter in NOVA, but staying silence will invite more oppression.

My friend's mom is from Romania, and she's said the same thing. The majority said the same BS about equity of the various groups, but the ulterior motive was to gain power for themselves and their cronies. "Always be suspicious of a dominant group claiming to be altruistic for the sake of a minority group" - that is what she always warned me.

You said exactly what I wanted to say. Thee reformers may have good enough intentions which is shared by most Asians believe it or not but these righteous reformers are either refusing or incapable of seeing what Asians have gone through and still go through and this TJ thing is the final straw.

It’s very unfortunate because we really don’t need further racial conflicts in this country but Asians have had it and are at the breaking point.

Ok TJ parent... So you prefer a random lottery to actually identifying, developing, and supporting/funding low income students with potential from an elementary school age so that they can also get the same prep opportunities?

that seems like a red herring. how many years does that take to get off the ground and is the status quo ok in the meantime? Once it gets up and running, does anyone have faith that whatever program FCPS ends up with will be remotely comparable to something like Curie?

The sad thing is they don't even pretend to hide their racism. The stereotype against Asians are openly talked about by the sec of ed of VA, Brabrand and many school board members all endorsed by the democrats. This whole proposal is centered on race. And they have no idea this singular "Asian" race, which they viewed as a problem to correct, is quite diverse.

There's no reason it can't be as good, or much better than Curie or any other local prep company. There's nothing special about Curie or the others. Analogous to the numerous SAT prep companies out there, they simply collect money from parents, then spend time drilling willing (or often unwilling) students for summer and/or year round on math and reading/writing. It's not really rocket science and they're not hiring PhD instructors or anything like that. And it's not like Curie or Sunshine have their own curriculum, they just spend time with the kids (in exchange for money of course) and they go through numerous practice problems. The math they do is certainly better than in the school classroom because they at least attempt to teach problem solving, but it's still just reviewing ways to solve all the various type of problems on these tests... again nothing special. So there is absolutely no reason FCPS couldn't implement this as an after school activity at many/most of their schools, IF THEY WANT TO. But there's the red herring... does FCPS actually want to do this (i.e raise the bar, i.e put their money where their mouth is and actually implement "equity")? Of course they don't, because we all know their hidden agenda is to dumbify everything in the name of equity, which actually hurts the low income and minorities waay more than the more affluent. Case in point: If I or anyone wants to circumvent FCPS "learning" I simply just buy or use my own material, or alternatively pay money for tutoring or enrichment, etc. all of which is infinitely better on average than what FCPS provides, even for AAP. Can the low income and minority students afford to do that? No they cannot, and that is tragic. They have to stick with the low level of quality, even if they're in AAP and to believe that FCPS is doing a great job helping them, which they are not.

Issues with equity and cheating regarding TJ have been around for years, in fact more than a decade. If FCPS wanted to do anything real about it, they would have. But let's imagine for a moment that they actually tried to do the above, and let's take a guess at what will happen. If they put in place a dedicated enrichment program for low income students in schools where they develop their abilities with a long term aim of reducing their disadvantage when it comes to later opportunities such as TJ, how many parents would cry that it's foul and unfair? There would be numerous complaints from non minorities that their kids aren't getting the same opportunity for free. So no, there is no way FCPS would do it, (not only because of this, but because as others said, it doesn't jive with their long term agenda to dumb down education).

As usual just like in the corporate world, just like in politics, the easiest solution is the one that satisfies the most customers. Even if superficial in content, a "lottery" and "equity" just sound good.

And for all the many DCummers who claim they really want more opportunities for underrepresented minorities: ask yourself if you really believe that, or are you just saying it because you don't think something is fair to you and thus should not exist in its current form? You know who you are. Do you really want to raise the bar and hold FCPS accountable for the lack of quality education, AND equity? Or do you just prefer to go along with equity because it sounds good, even though you know at the core the current or proposed system will not significantly change outcomes for most minority students. We know what really needs to be done in terms of equity: provide the same opportunities so that everyone gets a fair shot, but that doesn't mean water everything down:

Yes, spot on. Romania's corruption level showcases many lessons as to how easy it is to sow confusion in the general population by pretending to care about others, but not do anything about it because in reality they just want to continue enriching themselves.
