Would you consider banning the term JFC?

Anonymous
Hmmm...I don't actually know if I have ever used the term JFC on DCUM, but I certainly do in my personal life. I am a former Catholic, but I don't use the term because of the "former" part; I use it because it was so commonplace in my Catholic upbringing that it holds a place in my expressive lexicon. See also: Jesus, Mary & Joseph! Also profane, I know. I actually would never use the term in public/mixed company, where I also would typically limit swearing for fear of causing discomfort/offense. But, I also do not judge others for their choices. Interesting that Jeff won't ban it, and I think he likely won't because NOT all religious people are offended by the term, clearly, given the vast # of Catholics I know who "swear" in this exact same way. I, however, knowing your feelings, am super unlikely to use the term on DCUM from this point forward. Consider yourself having a victory of one, OP?

Oh yeah, because Christians are so persecuted

All these kind, well-meaning people who are clearly using it innocently.

Not.

Do you want OMG banned too? Or jeez louise? How about Jesus H Christ? Or just Christ, or just Jesus?

I would bet all the money I have that NO ONE is using it to intentionally persecute Christians.

That is so nice. Thank you!

And before people get all over me again (OP), I'm the first to say that I do swear some myself, certainly in private. If I stub my toe, my rantings will not be pretty. However, I do think that there are levels when it comes to this and that purposely taking the name of anyone's religious diety, in public, is risking being unnecessarily offensive. I would never say anything like this when other people are around, nor would I write this way on social media or here in an anonymous forum. It's a matter of degrees, but I think it's important to recognize that what we put out into the world is being judged and interpreted by others who hold different things sacred.

Again, as someone said, intentions don't matter. You are being informed here that a significant number of people find the term offensive. Use that information as you will - either to hurt and dismiss others, or cut it out of your vocabulary to show that you respect that.

Oh no! Sounds like these poor Christians will need to find a different way to feel persecuted.

Fine, but stop saying we’re intentionally persecuting you. We’re not.

Literally no one here has said that.

I’m a church-every-Sunday Christian and I use the term. People don’t use it because we are an anti Christian society—we use it exactly because we *are* a Christian society.

Actually, people have said that. They said it’s part of the “anti-Catholic” aspects of this board.

REally sick of the religious snowflakes. Get over yourselves. We are not making a new rule based on your fairytales.

Also, the following in response to my post about how apparently you all are being persecuted:

“All these kind, well-meaning people who are clearly using it innocently.

Not.”

What is that supposed to mean, except that people are supposedly using it in an insidious way?

OP here. Oh, sorry I missed that. Well, I don't agree with that.
