Oh, come on. It’s not hate speech against a religion. This is you saying that followers of the culturally dominant religion needs protecting from an acronym of a statement that you find blasphemous. Controlling peoples speech to bolster the dominant orthodoxy is… not just a slippery slope. It’s a greased ramp.
Find something else to be upset about, and be grateful that people aren’t spelling it out. How about from now on you just pretend that it stands for Jawas For Censorship? |
Jeff - you are not that dense. If you approve of the use of a term that is highly offensive to a specific group, do you draw a different line at the use of X, Y & Z? Are there some groups you prefer to offend, while others you put in a protected class? |

OP here, and no, this is not the same thing. JFC is an affront to Christians. It is deliberately taking the name of Jesus Christ in vain. Yes, I consider it offensive. |
| I'm a Christian and understand why you might find it offensive, but I think trying to get the moderator to ban it is over the top. You need to develop a thicker skin or avoid threads where it is used. This is a forum for people of all walks and you have to be more tolerant of others who don't have your sensibilities. If you get to request a ban because you find that offensive, why can't other people ban things that you say because they find them offensive? |
Great! So, if I come up with a phrase that mocks Allah or BLM or something else everyone considers above reproach, we're all OK with that, right? |
And other people find WTF more offensive. Why is your opinion more important than someone else’s? |
| Well, then I can ask Jeff to delete your posts when you minimize anti-Semitism, which happens a lot on this forum. It goes both ways. |
This isn’t a religious website. Sounds like you should find a new forum. |
Of course it does, as it should be. |
I'm fine with banning WTF too; I hate that term. But it does not call out and mock a diety. |
Mocking the dominant religion is not the same thing as mocking a minority religion, even if the “all lives matter” crowd refuses to admit it. When you are a member of a culturally dominant group, yes, you may have to swallow an insult or two. Consider it the price that you pay for having everything your way all the rest of the time. If we start censoring what goes against the dominant religion, it’s a short hop to theocracy. And gosh knows we’re already rushing in that direction quickly enough. |
Can you really “mock“ something that doesn’t exist? |
OP here. Sorry, but I disagree with that and I'm guessing Jeff will too, as he is usually very thoughtful and fair on this kind of thing. I don't always agree with his opinions or final verdicts on questions like this, but I do give him a lot of credit for trying to be fair to all of his readers. And of course in the end, it's his site and he can do whatever he wants. I just ask that he consider this. Oh and BLM is not the "dominant" thought now? Ha. Try mocking that at your own peril. |
| I briefly considered addressing all the points raised and "whataboutisms" in this thread, but I simply don't have the energy. But, just to be clear, I am not going to ban "JFC". |
