For the most part it is a hand me down car from Mom or Dad.

I guess that's how you distinguish between the rich and the merely quite affluent. The rich give their teenagers fancy new cars; the merely quite affluent give their teenagers a fancy hand-me-down car from Mom or Dad.

+1 I get that it's all relative, but lots of people in Potomac live in a bubble and don't understand that a hand-me-down nice car is still considered "affluent".

Our HHI is about $300K, and we are definitely upper middle class. But, I grew up lower income, couldn't afford a car in HS, so my perspective is a bit different than people who have never been anything other than upper/middle class. If that's all they know, then they probably think it's "normal". But, it really isn't.

When we were moving to the area, we did look in the Churchill cluster. We actually looked as for north as QO, down to Kensington. We settled somewhere in the middle and decided that the best thing for our kids was to be somewhere that was not mostly rich kids or mostly poor kids. All schools have issues, but rich schools have affluenza issues that we did not want our children to be around.

There are lots of people with diverse background in Potomac. Lots of Asians who are not necessarily rich but who like the good schools here. One family is clear a working class in my neighborhood, another is a high school teacher. Lots of black and Hispanics too. It's certainly not lily white.

Also lots of people who are obviously very rich and drive fancy European cars. My DS said a parent who was a CEO gave a talk to them in middle school.

It's 80% white/asian... so no, not diverse.

Where did you get that wrong number from? You can find the real numbers here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/04602.pdf

It shows that Churchill is 48.5% white, 28.6% Asian

The school is less than 50% white and asians apparently don't count as diversity.

If you want to see more black and hispanic people then say you want more black and hispanic people. If you want to talk about class then talk about class.

But stop grouping white people and asians together.

The two groups are not equivalent to each other, and even within the umbrella term "Asian," a person from India is not the same as someone from Korea.

The progressive white only only do the talk of diversity. None of them wants to live in SE DC. They want SAFE schools so they move to MC. One they are in MC, they start to complain about lack of diversity.

I have kids who did K-12 In the Churchill cluster. We moved to a “low-rent district” of Potomac where the average home is less than $700k. Their elementary school was in the same neighborhood as rambler, split level, townhouse type homes. Summer swim was in the same neighborhood. Thus, they grew up with other kids of a similar HHI. When they went to middle school, their social connections expanded a bit, but they really did not notice they were not as wealthy as others. Sometimes they would be invited to friends’ houses that were a lot nicer, but they didn’t seem to notice or care. They never begged us for things we couldn’t afford. They got jobs very early on and could afford the same brands of clothing or electronics as wealthier kids, but they chose to save the money instead. In high school, at Churchill, they socialized with a small group of friends with varying HHI. Common interests were the driving factor, not wealth or country club membership. I suspect they didn’t get to know the ones who socialized outside of school at the country club, but they didn’t seem to mind. My kids also hung out with a diverse group of students because they are minorities themselves.

One thing that bothered me about Churchill was not the wealth disparity, but the competition to get into the best colleges. This permeated academics, sports, art and music programs, and volunteer work. It was tiresome and stressful. Parents spent so much money and time to give their kids a leg up. I know I got caught up in that until I had to step back for my own sanity and that of my children.

In the time they went K-12, our HHI went from $150,000 ish to over $300K. But we did not upgrade our house or change our lifestyle. My kids have college paid for so that gives them a head start, but hopefully our frugality and financial management rubs off on them.

48.5+28.6 = 77.1 ~ 80

So 77.1% white/asian... still not diverse

I didn't say white and asian people are the same but if ~80% of a school is 2 types of people it's not diverse. Yea... and somebody from Maryland is not the same as somebody from Idaho... so what... it's not diverse, just own it . You sound really ignorant trying to say it is divers.

I have a kid at Churchill who swore he would never drive my old clunker. The day he got his driver's license he asked me for the keys. They are just like any other kid, happy just to have a car to drive.

Not too many country club kids at Churchill, unless you consider Lakewood which is not very prestigious. Most of the country club kids go to private.

Lots of schools in the area are 80% black and Latino combined but they're called diverse. Just saying. Anyway just curious what you would do with the diversity problem you indicated. Black and Hispanic families are welcome to the school if they live in the cluster.

So at first Churchill was “not diverse” and now you see actual statistics that it’s actually 50% not white. That actually seems pretty diverse to me. So there wasn’t enough before and now there’s diversity but not the “right kind.” Ok.
