DP. Of course it is. OP is presumably worried about being surrounded by kids who expect to jet to Europe twice a year, be given a Benz at 17, etc.

Folks living in an $800k house in Potomac aren’t doing that or anything close. They likely live comfortable lives with the occasional modest luxury, but nothing extravagant. It could easily be a two Fed family or other people with good, but not incredibly high earning jobs.

If I had a nickel for every time I've read a post like this on DCUM, I'd have a lot of nickels but still wouldn't be able to afford a $800,000 house in Potomac.

and then you hear about them complaining about those horrible kids in Scotland.

It's so funny to have them come on here and just out themselves, like nobody needs to do it for them.

And the irony is, YOU are the one who came here and brought up those kids... well well well.

OP ... you kids will go to school with kids that think living in a $800K house is not wealthy... just so you know.

It’s all relative, especially in this area. I live in a neighborhood with $500K houses. Where I am from, that is considered expensive. several of my neighbors are recent immigrants, some of them undocumented (renters).

Lots of people in this area spend an inordinate amount of money on housing leaving them with less disposable income.

No, it's not all relative.

So here you go OP.

If you kids go to your house at the cape and only ski in Colorado at xmas... not wealthy... you actually have to "jet" to Europe.

And if you kid get a jeep instead of a benz at 17... not spoiled because I mean ... it's only a jeep.

BTW 2 fed families can easily make $300K a year. SMFH

Ahahaha you think people living in an 800K houses have houses at the Cape... I am dying laughing.

Uh... I don't have school age kids so there are no kids that go to "our" school.

No, I'm a DP, and I'm the one who mentioned Scotland. I mentioned Scotland because it's part of Montgomery County history, and because it's relevant to Churchill. I'm going to repost this link:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/2007/01/14/the-scotland-of-the-doves-span-classbankheadthis-neighborhoods-roots-too-deep-to-be-put-downspan/17b2f8b0-79e6-45c0-ac0c-b137446c0f5a/

So when the fight happened at Winston Churchill High School recently and four Scotland students were charged with assault, and Principal Joan C. Benz sent out a letter saying, "Every incident revolving around this two-month ordeal has been Black-on-Black violence," residents in the neighborhood just off Seven Locks Road knew she was talking about their community.

And the need arose once again, as in the pre-integration days, to explain why the children of Scotland deserved to attend Churchill, to sit beside the children from much wealthier parts of Potomac.

"There is a stigma on Scotland. . . . They see Scotland as a place of danger, a place they can stay away from," says the Rev. James Phifer, pastor of Scotland AME Zion Church, which was built in the community 101 years ago. "And all of that is hogwash."

So what is it like to live in a place that people use careful language to describe?

Code words. Veiled language. Words that are less distasteful, less offensive, used to say one thing but imply another. "They came from Scotland."

What does it really mean when a fight is broadened to describe the neighborhood from which the teenagers came?

"The problem is, we understand the code because she is putting Scotland down," resident Craig Dove says, referring to Benz. "What I picked up is that it is a clear sign saying they don't want our kids at that school. They are already stereotyped for being from here."

"They label Scotland kids different," says Cynthia Polite, whose son was involved in the fight. Polite says the principal has told her that she wants her son transferred. "That lady at that school, that lady is trying to get Scotland kids out of there."

The point is compared to most people you are still rich.

OP, live where you like the house and have a decent commute. This above attitude is everywhere in the DC area. Doesn't matter whether you are in Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, or Potomac. Lots of people can't see out of their bubbles. At Churchill your kid won't have to come in contact with any of the actual poors.

Sorry you are house poor!

Many of the families at Churchill are renters not owners. The rent until the youngest kid graduates and then they move. Seen it time and time again.

If you are looking at the W schools, I think you might get a few more wealthier families than Wooton or WJ, but about the same as Whitman.

I am so confused. Am I rich or am I poor? Didn't you just tell me the people living in 800K houses were rich? Which is it?

None of my neighbors have houses on the Cape. Wait, actually, one has a house on the Eastern shore - so you must be right!

Can anyone with firsthand experience of the school culture comment on how kids who come from more laid back families manage at Churchill? It's a big school so I would hope that there are all types of kids and surely not everyone fits the stereotype? We like the bigger lots of Potomac, but not sure it's a great fit culturally.

They don't, actually. They suggest that there are a lot of rich kids and few poor kids at Churchill - which, in fact, is true. They don't mean the teachers are better, or the facilities, or the administration, or the curriculum, or any of the things that would make a school a great school academically.

You don't sound like someone who sent their kids to Churchill.

PP, just ignore these jealous posters who can't afford an $800K house and consequently paints everyone who can as the evil wealthy folks.

Here's a poster lamenting their 400K income because they just can't afford a decent house to fit their needs. But apparently those of us making 250K are skiing in Colorado, buying houses on the Cape, and making the lives of kids in Scotland miserable in our spare time.

There's nothing to even be jealous of! We have a $250K HHI. We obviously aren't poor, but in this area that just isn't "wealthy".
