+1

Xenophobic attitudes help make this worse.

Do you have any suggestions on how to reduce the crime in DC?

This is an embarrassment and will have huge repercussions for DC moving forward. Some posters on here or Facebook are minimizing what happened, perhaps due to political agendas (those kids are the victims of 400 years of oppression) or real estate values but as an outsider looking in, whether I am a teacher organizing a field trip, a convention planner or a tourist from the Midwest or Europe, I would seriously think twice about visiting DC until the local leadership gets its sh*t together and gets the crime under control. A gang attack in one of the best neighborhoods in DC outside of one of its best hotels, near the diplomatic center of the city, sends the message that DC is not safe for visitors.

Do you people who are afraid to set foot in DC, where many of us live, understand statistics? Because the likelihood of a random event like this happening is very low.

Yet, it happens every week. On the metro or on the streets.

I was born in DC and have been around for a long, long time and would rarely hear about incidents of this level (gang on stranger crimes in front of a nice hotel). So yes, this particular statistic is alarming for anyone thinking of spending their $$$ in DC.

Yep. Been here 20+ years. Raising my kids here. This is horrible, but it does not define the city.

Try convincing people who might think about visiting DC. All they will see is a gang of teens out past midnight attacking a tourist in front of one of the nicest hotels in DC. This has made international news at this point.

For most white victims of violent crime, another white person is the perpetrator. Black youth are much more likely to be the victim of a violent crime by a black perpetrator.

It is inaccurate to portray this sort of rare incident of black on white violent crime as an epidemic problem in DC.

do you? so far the xenophobes have suggested summary execution and running away from all black people.

So are you boycotting Chicago, too? I mean, the murder rate has been sky high for years and is getting worse. A few years ago there was a string of attacks where random people on the street were getting punched in the face by teenagers. That was happening all over, including the Gold Coast, right off Michigan Ave. Wouldn't Chicago's crime send the same message, that it's not safe for visitors?

Funny, but tourists still seem to be flocking there. So what's your issue with DC really about?

Not PP, but I really think the only way to address this problem is twofold:

1) wraparound services from before birth
2) breaking up concentrated poverty

The first will never happen. The second will happen haphazardly through gentrification, but not in a concerted way to actually improve the living conditions of poor families. They will just get pushed further out to other areas, which will then see a rise in crime.

Yes, I do. I live in the city very close to where this latest incident occurred. Stop saying that prosecuting these crimes is racist, for one. Prosecute all of the offenders in the same, fair way. In the video, it looked like to me that some of the kids were white. I personally do not care whether they are black, white, Asian. I care about the fact that these are violent crimes happening all over the city. Why is the DC Council and the AG not more worried about these crimes?

Yes, if only all potential victims would just arm themselves, this world would be a much safer place.

And certainly they would not hit any bystanders, what with it being in front of a big hotel in a busy neighborhood. Definitely safer.

Because we hear so often about *lawfully* armed citizens accidentally shooting innocent bystanders in self defense shootings, right? /s

You have the resources of the entire interwebz at your disposal. Find for us just 3 incidents - just three - where a person in public with a *legally carried* gun shot a innocent bystander or the wrong person by mistake.

Go. Start searching. Let us know what you turn up. If it happens as often as you imply, it should be a quick task.

We'll wait.

are you kidding? there are oodles of unintended shootings by people carrying legally. it literally happens every day.

Oh bullsh*t. Please cite ONE person here who said the kids shouldn't be prosecuted. Nobody said that. On the other hand, the white nationalists here said that you should run away from all black kids, or just be armed to shoot into the crowd. What this PP said is that the racists who don't live in DC have nothing useful to contribute.

Because this has worked so well for other metropolitan cities. The solution lies with parents and not the government. Been there, done that. Didn’t work. Unless you want an authoritarian regime. Been there, done that you all didn’t want the police enforcing the law, so this is what we get.
