Thank goodness! I hope that these lay “midwives” continue to get prosecuted when babies die needlessly. |
That’s some straight up cray cray |
If the courts can prove that she and the father were aware the baby was breach, they should all face charges. |
The same people who prefer to give birth on their living room floor rather than the hospital with actual doctors and a NICU? The reality is that medical emergencies can happen even if you have a licensed midwife. Babies should be delivered by a proper medical team with access to emergency medical services for both mom and baby. |
I know someone who had this happen as well. Had 2 homebirths and was all over Facebook advocating home birth over hospitals. On her third homebirth she had a massive hemorrhage and had to be rushed to the hospital, barely made it in time. The fourth baby was born in a hospital. All is great at home, until it isn't. |
I hope things like this will spur hospitals to change the way they operate. I wanted a midwife in a hospital setting (I wanted the Inova birthing Inn). Insurance denied a midwife and instead forced me into a 42 hour induction (and I was unable to walk because the hospital doesn't do wireless monitoring). It's like there's no middle ground between completely medicalized and having a baby at home without insurance. |
If you don’t have insurance maybe 4K for a midwife is a better option than a hospital. I’m amazed at how much hospital births cost. Even with insurance. |
For the record, this woman claiming the professional title of “midwife” is not a matter of her being licensed or unlicensed or midwives in or out of the hospital being the safer care provider...there are no articles coming out attesting to her training. At this point, she could call herself an unlicensed ob/gyn or lawyer for that matter. She isn’t a midwife as far as what is recognized as a professional in this day and age.
Midwives are board certified and typically a minimum of masters of science level education or higher in this country. |
Clearly this charged Nebraska woman was not anything, but to your latter point, some are, some are not. Certified Nurse Midwives and Certified Professional Midwives are different and licensing requirements vary widely by state. |
THIS |
If the midwife didn’t misrepresent herself, the parents are equally at fault. |
As the vast majority of births take place in a hospital setting your argument is skewed statiscally from the start. |
I delivered both my kids with the Loudoun Community Midwives at the Birthing Inn. Insurance fully paid as if I had used a doctor. Your denial came from your insurance, not the hospital. |
^^^and I also had a wireless monitor. |
I have had a homebirth, with a CNM (certified nurse midwife). She would not have attempted a breech birth, or taken a mom with a history of bleeding, or twins. She had, in her kit, pitocin (as a CNM she is able to do that) and oxygen.
I never would have gone with some unlicensed midwife. I am a big supporter of safe home births. |
