Updated: Luke Perry has a stroke -- has now passed away

Definitely feel completely devastated (which I never feel for celebrities).

I think it comes from him being one of my first celebrity crushes, and also because I rediscovered that crush in Riverdale- he aged so well.

But I think what makes it worse, is because it was from natural causes... or at least seems to be. Rather than suicide or overdose.. he just reached an age where that kind of thing happens... and while it is still way too young, it isn't that far off from when "normal" people start to pass. And, what is also hard to believe, is that "we" (the age of people who grew up with Dylan McKay) are entering that zone... that closer to death phase of life. It is like a close childhood friend passing.. which is all too much to bear.

He apparently didn't smoke, apparently people here think if you don't smoke somehow bad things won't happen to you health wise.

Agree. A 50 year-old cousin of mine died last month, from recently diagnosed pancreatic cancer. I'm still reeling from the loss, and realize this is how my mother's friends felt many years ago, when she passed away in her early 50's. This is the age where these things start, and we don't know who among us will be struck. It's a frightening thing.

Also agree. Last year my 42 year old friend died of a stroke. The doctors never were able to figure out why.

So sad! I remember the first season 90210 was on, my sister got me all this Luke Perry stuff (including a T-shirt and notebook) for Christmas as I had a bit of a crush on him

Did he smoke for that long? Wonder if he had high blood pressure too and/or diabetes. I hope they share more. Might make some people go get a physical and make some changes who were intitially in denial.

The official statement was pretty firm in saying that no further information will be released. However, his neighbor said he suffered from back pain and had surgery not that long ago. Perhaps a complication from that, or meds related to that? I understand the speculation about smoking and/or drinking, because he did look quite weathered for his age (DH and his friends are a few years older and look much younger), but there are no official reports about that.

One of my closest friends died suddenly of a brain aneurysm.

Fine one minute, gone the next.

She didn't drink or smoke. She was overweight but did a lot of walking and swimming.

He had precancerous growths in his colon a few years ago (advocated for checks) and said he changed certain lifestyle habits, including heavy consumption of red meat. Said until that point he was a "steak and potatoes" guy. He might have had high cholesterol from that long-time habit, which is a risk factor.
