PG County "Lucky Loser" of Amazon HQ2

Anonymous
Notice that 12:20 doesn't mention anything about kids or schools. I agree that the housing option and newer retail in some areas (Bowie is a good example) are very attractive. No waiting lists to join local pools! But, the MS and HS options are well known to be a problem. Even the kids who were in TAG all through ES and MS are fighting to get into Eleanor Roosevelt Sci/Tech program or else they are going private at high cost.

So, the living may be pretty good, and the price is excellent... but when schools are part of the equation ... PGCPS doesn't make the cut.

The best thing PG county could do is put a lot more spots in the TAG prgrams and bring in the kids who are currently going private for elem school or bring in new families. And then create more speciality HS programs... and THEN PG county will have a shot at winning in the Amazon game. Schools are crucial.

Because it is nice and affordable.

It's probably the worst county in md and it has..
A Big Ten university
NASA
NOAA
Andrews AFB
Census
FDA
National Archives
IRS
Army research lab
An NFL franchise
The nations richest African American population

Compare that to Va's worst county. Greensville county. What a shitshow.

That's why md is the richest state. Even its worst county is superior than 50 percent of Va's counties.

Maryland has 24 counties. Virginia has 134. Hardly a fair comparison. Also NOAA HQ is in Montgomery not PG County just like National Archives HQ is in DC not PG County. But carry on.

+1. I love how all the Maryland boosters said having to cross a bridge was so awful - how it made Virginia "so far removed" from DC and the rest of the area. It's like they'd never seen rivers in Brussels, Buenos Aires, London or Hong Kong. But now that Amazon is coming to Crystal City, suddenly it's "Oh PG is gonna benefit! We're right over the bridge!"

You do realize that this thread was started by someone in VA, right? But carry on with your MD bashing so you can feel good about yourself.

NP. I see no evidence this thread was started by someone in VA.

I just looked on great schools. And in Bowie, MD there are three elementary schools that have a 8-9 rating on GS. I understand the high schools and middle schools might not be as great, but many of these people in this area send their kids to privates.

Nothing is a magnet for business like three elementary schools in Bowie!

Look, at those goalposts move! First, it was about the schools and crime. After a counterpoint about schools, the response is about the business climate. How does this really follow in a discussion about the benefits that PG (presumably in the form of new high-income residents) might receive from Amazon moving to another county?

I’m just saying there are plenty of elementary schools in Virginia that aren’t a 8/9. But people still pay top dollar for a 5 or 6 rated school.

I think point here is that the county should get some of the new residents (and their spending) without the $$$$$ offered by other local governments. I agree that the middle and high school options in the county leave something are not good, but that will only stop some homebuyers. Some won't have or want kids. Some want private anyway. Some will have young kids and take a wait and see approach for MS that is 6-10 years away. Others will brave the specialty program lottery, knowing they can relocate if it doesn't work out. Or perhaps they will consider private as a fall back option.

FWIW, the schools have been a central issue in the county politics for a few years now.

But if you make a good living why not send your kids to private? It’s only for a few years anyway.

PGCPS just added a TAG MS program at Tasker and I think they should open another program in the northern part of the county. Lots of people bail out of PG due to MS options. Solving the MS problem would make a huge difference. They don't need to add TAG centers at the ES level because 1) those programs aren't full and 2) if they increase viable MS options parents would be less likely to leave a neighborhood ES.

There are several new-ish options for HS, Middle College Program at Largo/PGCC, College Park Academy, IB Program at Parkdale, Bowie Summit program, Central High's French Immersion, etc..

I have lived in PG for five years and if I were to move to somewhere else in the dc metro area I would probably choose another part of PG, just a closer commute. I also lived in Silver Spring for five years and I would NEVER move back there.

True but they don't really know it's because they are racist.

The thing is most of them cannot even locate Siberia on a map much less live there. Sad but true.
