Nothing written above demonstrates that Arena left a bigger mess than Klinsmann. We made the WC in 2006. The team was in shambles when Klinsmann left.

No, because I don't care. What I care about is using Klinsmann as a scapegoat to avoid the real problems: US Soccer and MLS. Stats are nothing if you can't win big games. And that will come with two things neither US Soccer nor MLS does well: Player development and coach development.

Our problems are structural and won't be solved by hiring someone like JCO or Tata. But US Soccer trying to rig the choice for Berhalter shows that they have learned absolutely nothing from the past four years. Not. A. Single. Thing. Just reinforcing mediocrity.

Klinsmann would still be coaching if he did not say that our best players, especially young ones, should not settle for comfy mediocrity of MLS, but instead they should strive to play in Europe.

It is the truth. He was 100% correct. It’s where old FIFA players go to retire, when they are no longer in their prime. We can’t hang with them in their prime. MLS is at slow speed.

Not disputing that the players should play in Europe (obvious to everyone with a brain, including US soccer), but we would have been better off if he had stayed. He lost control of the team completely and did not do a good job cultivating the infusion of new blood into the team. That alone would have helped with the player issues alluded to above.

The fact is that there are some political aspects to his job and he should have just kept his big mouth shut on player movement to Europe. That he couldn’t do that is another strike against him, but not the only one. That was the least of the problems he left. I don’t know why anyone would keep trying to defend the indefensible on this other than the pure dogma that foreign = better at any cost.

Really sounds just like a bunch of soccer moms wowed by the new Brit running a soccer clinic down the street. Man, he must be a soccer genius with that accent....

F@ck you. It tends to be the dads with their head up the coaches asses that are wooed by that kind of thing, prancing along behind him in their full FIFA warm up suits. The biggest sychophants are the dads. I sit there and watch it happen constantly and most of them never played the sport.

Ooooh, you’re fiesty; I like that! Single or married? Let’s grab a drink, promise not to wear my special edition Ronaldo warm ups.

On the positive side for Berkhalter, the bar is so low here that all he has to do is seem halfway competent to greatly exceed expectations.

If you're going to be a complete asshole, at least spell Berhalter's name right.

Nah, why would I?? Goes with the complete asshole package.

So it look like USSF thinks that the coach must come from the MLS. It is notable that the two teams that are playing for MLS cup are coached by an Argentinian and Venezuelan. Do you think any of these two guys are in running?

No one is "in the running".
It's Berhalter.
They clearly wanted an American coach, and for some weird reason, preferred him to Ramos.

This is infuriating. We will probably miss the next WC too.

Wonder what all you America haters will do when he exceeds expectations and they make the WC. Will be a pleasure to see all of your heads collectively explode

Our expectation is that the USMNT should have a word class coach and advance to later stages of the world cup. We don't hate America, we just cannot stand corruption and incompetence.

That’s an unreasonable expectation when we don’t have the top players. Our culture and professional system is not yet at the level to produce the players that European countries do. Anyone with half a brain knows that. If we were to make it to the later stages of the World Cup with our current roster, anyone with an intelligence level higher than moron would realize that would be an exceeds expectations scenario.

The US is normally ranked around 20-30, so a reasonable expectation is to make the WC and be competitive in the group stage.
Anything more is a bonus, and anything less is unacceptable.

You are less likely to exceed or even meet expectations if you don't hire a great coach.

We have:

One of the world's top 100 players, who's being chased by not one but two Premier League teams (and Bayern as well)

The son of the greatest African player ever, who plays at PSG alongside Neymar, Cavani, etc.

Another young player at Schalke who scored his first Champions League goal this season

A young goalie who's likely to become the backup at Manchester City, where he gets to work with Pep Guardiola

...and a coach who's never so much as coached a high school squad in an international tournament.

The US is just starting to get a decent roster of talented players gaining experience in top-level European play under top-level international coaches. They deserve a coach worthy of those talents and not someone who has an okay record coaching an okay team in a third-rate league.

It's not about "hating America." It's about USSF swinging the pendulum all the way to the other extreme in the hiring process because they learned the wrong lessons from their experience with Klinsmann, and too many of the soccer "experts" lining up to justify the choice with stale clichés about Berhalter's alleged skills that don't make any sense.

I saw Berhalter referred to as the Bill Belichick of soccer a few nights ago. I puked in my mouth a little. Like, they know BB’s won 7 Super Bowls as a coach right? lol if anything Berhalter is the Jeff Fisher of soccer, but that’s kind of an insult to Jeff Fisher.
