That’s an unreasonable expectation when we don’t have the top players.  Our culture and professional system is not yet at the level to produce the players that European countries do.  Anyone with half a brain knows that.  If we were to make it to the later stages of the World Cup with our current roster, anyone with an intelligence level higher than moron would realize that would be an exceeds expectations scenario. We have:

One of the world's top 100 players, who's being chased by not one but two Premier League teams (and Bayern as well)

The son of the greatest African player ever, who plays at PSG alongside Neymar, Cavani, etc.

Another young player at Schalke who scored his first Champions League goal this season

A young goalie who's likely to become the backup at Manchester City, where he gets to work with Pep Guardiola

...and a coach who's never so much as coached a high school squad in an international tournament.

The US is just starting to get a decent roster of talented players gaining experience in top-level European play under top-level international coaches. They deserve a coach worthy of those talents and not someone who has an okay record coaching an okay team in a third-rate league.
