I am offended by your blanket statment - maybe it was the service. Do you know me? Have you ever seen me leave a tip? By the way, I'm black. Not every person from every race is the same. How about saying some. If you feel this way what was wrong with Kayne West saying George Bush doesn't like black people. Becasue it was "his" observation does that make it true? No. |

Anyone making blanket statements about an entire race/ethnic group/age group, whatever: MORONS. Your limited experience (and it is limited, despite your belief otherwise) tells you only about the specific individuals with whom you were in contact. If I were going to use my experiences to draw similar "IT MUST BE SO" conclusions, I would say that all old white men like to sexually assault women, Mexicans are all hard workers, homosexuals are all extremely intelligent, white women are all self centered and bitchy.
But I am smart enough to know that none of the above statements is a true statement about ANY group. They may be specific about individuals, but I can't apply experiences with individuals to label a group as a whole. That would be asinine. |
I am offended that any "fairly nice restaurant" would allow something like this to happen. I can only imagine the other "types of people" they catalogued: latino? Jewish? Asian? Gay? Give me a break. This whole thread makes me sick. |
how silly. so why is that we (US Govt, countless other organizations) perform countless studies and issue countless reports about the different levels of achievement, income, education levels, consumer habits, etc., amongst the various ethnic groups in this country? Of course not EVERY member of such group hits the # on the nose, but there are enough cultural differences between us where we can learn something from each other and learn more about ourselves. Who cares if blacks AS A GROUP ON AVERAGE don't tip that well? How is that racist? It is simply a matter of statistics. I'm more curious to know the reasons why. Walk around and survey every waiter in town if you like. |
Statistically, do African immigrants tip differently than African Americans? Does it matter how long an AI lives in the US? |
I believe we perform these studies because we're still stuck in the past where it was important to keep track of what was going on with different groups. We used to not be able to see outside of Black and White. Things aren't like that any longer are they? Gradually we're starting to understand that being born with a certain skin color doesn't indicate anything. Not to mention all the millions of mixed race individuals now. Where do they fit in? And if you believe there's some statistics about hoe well Blacks tips, then please tell me what they are. What organization was conducting these studies? Or is the "observation" of servers we're going off for these statistics? |
It's not racist. It's a stereotype. It used to be that being Black went hand in hand with watermelon and chicken. (Well those jokes haven't gone anywhere) And if you don't know why they are useless and harmful then I can't helpful. |

The "observations" of predominantly white servers, would be my guess.
(I say this as a white former server - one who NEVER came to conclusions about entire races based on the behavior of my sampling of customers.) |
this is the PP. I have no idea, but my personal opinion is that african immigrants share little culturally with african americans as a larger group. primarily because there isnt 400 years of slavery and its aftermaths overhanging every dealing. |
*can't help you* of course. |

The white servers I knew were always careful to never stereotype, especially black people. (this is all in Mont Co by the way)
I am telling you again, it was the black servers who wanted to avoid black customers the most. Sure maybe this was just one restaurant at one period in time. Then why are others saying the same thing? I'm on the side of "stereotypes are not helpful" and "there's no way this stereotype is true across the board"... but if this is a GIVEN in the restaurant industry, particularly in areas with a lot of black people, then why NOT talk about it? |
Well you are proving her point about the white women right now!! |
I might agree with this, except that you don't know whether the first of the quoted PPs (that would be me) is a white woman, or if the responding "how silly" PP is a white woman. |
It's not a GIVEN. I work in a business where tipping is not necessary at all. People insist so the employees do accept them. The biggest tippers are in our DC stores. Chinatown and Union Station. Know which store gets the worst tips? Bethesda. So according to your logic I should now believe that the poorer Black people in DC are better tippers than the wealthier Whites in Bethesda. Do I? No. Generalizations are dumb. You'll be lot happier in life when you judge people individually rather than what you perceive them to be because of their skin color. Didn;t we learn anything from Martin Luther King Jr. ?

#1, we are talking about the restaurant industry. #2, nothing would make me happier than to have a true colorblind society. get rid of all affirmative action and all mentions of race anywhere, including census forms and diversity programs. do nothing but divide us, not bring us together. there is no such thing as a "race" of humans, there are no separate breeds! how ridiclous. we are all identical. |
