| It's not my problem that people chose to be working as waiters or waitresses. I don't "owe" them anything. I won't tip at all if it is bad service. If it is good, then I give 15%. if it is excellent, I will give 20%. It is not my problem that they need tips to buy groceries etc. Everyone who works uses the salary/earnings for groceries. Big deal. |
| You're just simply wrong. I'm currently working at a place in the heart of ill educated WHITE individuals in the southeast of America and we all look forward to black Americans coming in because they are often more hospitable as well as better tippers. Black Americans often tip me 20% here or more. I've also worked more towards a major city in which the truth is completely opposite. I will share that there is truly no place in the entire world that is like the SE of the United States. |
| For the most hilarious discussion on black people's tipping habits, see the movie "Crash.". It is an excellent movie with serious themes, but this one scene is one of the funniest ever. |
The irony drippeth. |

This area is so fullk of the most entitled insufferable people. I am willing to bet very good money that those of you who tip pre-tx, and not on alcohol, and only 15% if service is excellent have NEVER waited tables, nor probably even worked a minimum wage job. Must be nice to be so privileged, but you might be interested to know that not everyone is so lucky!
I am white and a women and was a server for several years, both in fine dining establishments in Penn Quarter, and in bars. By no means did this always hold true, and you would make these assumptions at your peril but in general the worst tippers were :old people, foreign people, African-Americans, and people with small children. OF COURSE there were very generous people in all those catagories and stingy people in the leftover catagories. Best tippers tended to be young (24 and up actually....not really young people...21 year olds just out to get drunk) people of any race (other than foreigners who I guess often didn't realize, or could not bring themselves to tip well). |
| I always tip 20% of the final (after tax) number. It's easier to do the math! |

waiters and waitresses are not poor.
Nothing illegal about not tipping. But it is illegal to cheat on your taxes, not pay your bills on time, cross the street when the light is red, speed in a 35mph road, drink and drive, shoplift All things considered. So What? |
