Sometimes it's like banging your head against a wall. The problem for me is that be people feel the way they do about certain things and no amount of reasoning will help them see otherwise. You even said yourself if you're a Black person and you tip well that doesn't change actual experience. Well wouldn't all those servers that received the great tips from Black people have changed their opinions on how well Blacks tip? No. Because once something is generally accepted as "just is what it is" you stop noticing all the times where the experience doesn't fit your pre-conceived notions. Your Italian scooter example was silly. One - how is it harmful to any Italians that a lot may ride scooters? Two - That example, if true, would be a result of environment. Maybe they are environmentally conscious and have crowded cities so scooters make more sense. That is no way the equivalent of saying "being born Black means you don't tip well." Please tell me you see the difference. |

| I see the difference in the statement "being born Black means you don't well" but that is your statement, it was not mine. Frankly if the worst racial stereotype you can hang on anyone is being a bad tipper, I bet most Black people can live with that. Reread the post-no one said all Blacks don't tip, they said that most of their bad tips had come from Blacks-there's a difference there, subtle, but it's there. And I'm not promoting "preconceived notions". Preconceived means the notion already exists. I haven't changed your thinking have I? Have you now become a hateful, prejudiced person as a result of my opinion? No, and probably no one else has either. |

| as a result of this thread i asked a black friend today if he usually tips. his answer - hell no! he told me that nobody ever gives him any tips ... hah. sort of funny. |

Rule of thumb:
If someone else is treating, never complain or correct them publicly. Express gratitude, only, after sufficient and sincere attempts to contribute to and/or pay for the tab. Any 'correction' you make to the tip should be done 100% discreetly. |

| All of you people haven't a clue. Servers on the east coast of America are paid just over $2 an hour. These individuals whom are for the most part 18 to 24 years of age and are students rely on their tips to live. Yes, live: pay for groceries and rent. When you tip these people 15% they only receive around 13% or less after tipping out a percentage to the people that either bus the tables or bring you bread and water and sometimes the host or hostess depending on the restaurant. These individuals work very hard stocking ice, sodas, garnishes, plates, napkins, and are on a constant run for 6 to 8 hours five nights a week. Servers run on average 5 miles around the restaurant a night. If you want service pay 20% for it! Otherwise go to McDonald's, learn how to cook, or send an email to restaurant owners telling them to pay their servers more per hour on the US's east coast. PLEASE! |

| Imagine a world without servers. Who is going to bring you your cocktail just the way you requested it? Who will know just how you like your dish prepared and make sure that its in front of you and that it happens in thirty minutes or less. A personal chef? I AM A PERSONAL CHEF and I'm telling you now I would be nothing without knowledgeable and talented servers. Get a clue! Tip your servers! |

| As far as race we all know the phrase, Can't judge a book by its cover. It's true and we all know it! Some black Americans tip exceptionally well as do Asian, Muslim, or whomever! Doesn't matter. What is required is education. Education in culture and absolute awareness of oneself and the culture surrounding is essential. We're talking about about good food and good service. All I'm asking is that the next time you have a great server...LEAVE THEM A DECENT TIP WHICH IS AT LEAST 15% OR MORE! Ever heard of the more you give the more you get? Look out for the people thqt are SERVING you. |

Assuming it is true that blacks tip less, then maybe it is because they get poor service compared to other ethnic groups?
