100% agree. And I really don't think anyone meant any harm in discussing their observations as waiters as to who tips and who doesn't. Not sure why the one poster took it so personally. |
Here's a restaurant that does that: "Instead of working for tips, we address the costs of providing table service by including an 18% charge for dining-in guests. We do not accept any gratuities. (If you’d really like to express extra gratitude at the end of your meal, you can leave cash behind as a donation to our charity of the month, which is listed on the menu.) We believe that charging for service and declining tips is an appropriate option for professionals in any industry including hospitality. Our service revenue, like all our revenue, is distributed among everyone who works here (which is not allowed with tips). This is us living the truth that everybody here is fully responsible for the quality of your experience, and that we all work together to give you the best food, drink and service possible." http://www.thelinkery.com/notipping.php http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/12/magazine/12tipping-t.html |
Per Se operates the same way. |
Have you considered that the "anti-semitic thread" was recognizable by its title? Whereas no one would know this thread contained anti-black remarks just from looking at the title? |
They may not have meant any harm but it is hurtful when people keep fueling negative stereotypes. Whether they try to chalk it up to their observations or not. I can give a ton of examples of this (involving all different races) and I don't see how anyone couldn't agree it's just not a good idea to do this. And FYI it isn't just that one poster you're offending. |
That particular one may have been but there are plenty where it's not so obvious. The thread about the mom returning used stockings to Gymboree comes to mind. Somebody piped in that she must've been Jewish because every Jew, in her experience, was cheap. Sounds like the same nonsense being spouted here. But for some reason everyone sees that is an offensive and not true stereotype but if it's Blacks not tipping people here say "well it must be true" because servers agree. Seems hypocritical to me. |
' to me, that is exactly what AG Holder meant when he said we were a nation of cowards when it comes to discussing race issues. Nothing wrong at all with an open dialogue about race - in fact, in my opinion nothing but good can come of it. i'd love to hear all of your observations with respect to all races. |
| When I was waiting tables in the mid-90's (fairly nice restaurant) we had a whiteboard in the kitchen where we would write down the lowest tips we received. We also had codes for the certain type of people they were. The lowest was $0.02. Our average was the lowest tippers were 97 percent black. The black servers in the restaurant didn't even want to wait on black diners! Obviously there are enough of us that have shared this exact same experience that we don't need a cited study. Black people generally don't tip well. |

Well I don't mind discussing race, but I think we're talking about two different things. I don't form concrete ideas or assumptions about people based on the color of their skin. There are too many times where I'd be wrong and I don't think it serves any purpose. It is hurtful and incredibly annoying for the people that don't fit that generalization. It makes so much more sense to me that where and how a person is raised would have much more to do with the person they are rather then the color of their skin. I've come across so many people that think they already know so much about me just because they see I'm Black. It's irritating. My husband thinks it's funny to say Asians can't drive. I don't think it's funny and it doesn't matter how many times somebody does something dangerous on the road and he points out that they are Asian. Doesn't it seem silly (and mean) to believe that because someone is born Asian that they don't know how to drive a car? Not to mention that the many times the person isn't Asian it still wouldn't change his perception. He just doesn't even notice. Saying Black people don't tip well is the same thing to me. Although, now that I know people already think they know I'm going to tip like crap it is tempting to do so. But I wouldn't because that's not who I am. So stop telling me that it is because I'm Black. And I would love to know what servers do for people who's skin color they can't peg? Why are we still pigeon holing people in this day and age? We are so far beyond this country being just Black, White and everyone else. Aren't we? |
| look at the traffic accidents per capita in asian countries. amazing. |
Ughhhh!! OK I give up. This board drives me nuts sometimes. |
| Holy crap, has this jumped the rails. The OP's FIL is cheap, and 6 pages later, we have people talking about how certain ethnic groups don't tip well. WTF? |
Maybe they are from a place where it isn't common to own a car like in a poor country or where most people take public transportation. |
Yeah, I find myself looking at friends and neighbors and imagining the bizarre things that I now (as a result of this board) believe must be in their heads. Wow. |
| well i've been to multiple asian countries (which obviously makes me an expert in asiana) and i can definitively tell you that their driving is awful. and did i mention i'm an expert? |
