My DC will graduate from the Blair SMAC this spring. I don't know what we would have done with the HGC, TPMS magnet, and Blair. If any kid ever needed that curriculum, it is ours.

I have one more to go re: HS magnets. I really hope MCPS does not dismantle the magnets or the app process in the next 2 years. I am so glad we missed the middle school magnet upheaval this past year. I know so many intelligent kids who didn't get in. I do not understand how eliminating all the criteria except for the test ameliorates the issue that some kids prep for the tests. I hope they keep essays and teacher recs. At least a couple more years!

Seems like they're expanding these programs.

How many kids are we talking about? I thought it was only 10 or 15 kids added to the program. That's certainly not enough to disrupt an entire program or cause a scheduling disaster. It's my understanding that the few waitlisted kids who were admitted last minute (and no, my child is not one of them) attended the orientation and received their schedules at the same time as everybody else. The first week of school is always chaotic with kids switching into and out of classes. And the CAP classes have not been shortened.

Yeah this fits with what I heard from my kid. Do we even know if they added an extra class or did they just distribute a few extra kids among the classes?

My kid is just so excited that a couple of old friends that were waitlisted got in the program and she's going to be able to hang with them all year.

They established a new group. There are now 4 groups instead of 3. Close to 100 kids instead of 75.

The Coordinator mentioned that last year there were 78 kids and this year 95. That's only 17 more (qualified) kids. Sounds like it's a non-issue.
