Everyone admitted off of CAP waitlist?

As the parent of a DCC 7th grader, I think it is great!

I wouldn't count on this as a permanent expansion. It might be which would be great, but it could just be a temp solution for this year only.

Why do you think so?

Because they did it in response to the idea (or accusation) that something in the evaluation process wasn't right. There wasn't a hint (of course this is all hearsay b/c no one has posted the actual letter) about expanding the number of seats in the program. Just an admission of an issue and the inclusion of those on the waitlist.

I would agree. They won't expand the program permanently unless they are given the resources to expand the program permanently. That's a budget issue, and not likely to occur.

What they are more likely to do going forward is tighten up the standards and clear up any existing grey areas in the selection process to stymie any squeaky-wheel waitlist parents in the future.

I'm so glad my daughter will make it through before MCPS completely waters down their wonderful Magnet programs in the name of "Fairness". Definitely sad.

My DC will graduate from the Blair SMAC this spring. I don't know what we would have done with the HGC, TPMS magnet, and Blair. If any kid ever needed that curriculum, it is ours.

Nice for you. We entered in seventh grade and are completely shut out of the magnets because of it.

Why does that affect HS applications?

My child came home worried from orientation, primarily about the teachers and workloads.

Also, after putting a lot of work into summer homework, found out that it’s completion grades.

Interesting. I think the only conclusion we can draw regarding how much summer homework counts is that it varies year to year and by teacher. I wish there were less summer homework. By high school, kids are so busy during the year, and usually are also working hard at various things over the summer; they don’t need a lot of MCPS academic work on top of it. English was analyzing two books plus a movie. I think one book would have been more appropriate. But oh well, I’m a big CAP fan, just a minor grumble.

But that’s a choice you made. There’s an opportunity cost for everything. You could have moved to another district.

And not attending a middle school magnet doesn't mean your child is "shut out" of the high school options. My DC attended private school for middle school and then a high school magnet program in MCPS.

For CAP it's been the same four 9th grade teachers for years.

I tried telling new CAP parents this on another thread weeks ago.

Movie? There wasn't a movie involved in this year's CAP summer homework.

There was for tenth grade. Part of the variation by year mentioned in above posts.
