special needs son excluded and he knows

Anonymous
Just wanted to add that feeling left out is not just a problem for special needs kids. When I was twelve, the school boundaries for my neighborhood were changed and I had to attend a different school. This meant leaving behind all of the friends that I had known since elementary school. I still remember when a popular girl at my new school threw a huge party to celebrate the summer vacation and her birthday. Just about everyone in the class was invited but me, including all of my new friends. I was completely humiliated. To this day, I can still recall how terrible the whole episode made me feel as I wondered "what is wrong with me?"

My daughter is not yet at the party age but when she gets there, we will either invite a few close friends or everyone. Thanks for the thoughtful thread, OP!

Here is to a happy and healthy 2009 for you and your son.

Hello, I also checked this thread when it popped up again. The Op has not contacted me for party, but if she is reading this, there is no time limit on it. It's completely on me, and she can contact me anytime. I agree with PP's that this thread is so important, and breaks my heart to think about a child staying home when their classmates are partying. Some of the special needs children that I know have some of the biggest and sweetest hearts in the world. Gz
