She's my neighbor. I wonder whether she'll send the child to our IB, Shepherd, in three years, or go private.

I guarantee she will send baby to Shepherd.

Nah I bet she’ll go private. Like fancy, 30k a year private.

that's not particularly "fancy." closer to 40K and that doesn't include extras like fees and extended care.

The most expensive private, WIS, Costs Pre-Kindergarten Tuition: $33,710.
Kindergarten to Grade 5 Tuition: $36,600.

Upper grades is 40k. And agree she will get scholarships.

There are several more expensive privates out there. Sidwell's lower school's base tuition was around $40K this year. Beauvoir, GDS, etc. are close to $40K too.

That is definitely the point of this thread.

Facepalm.

PP here. I know it was tangential, but just clarified. I know some people reading may be contemplating private at some point, and as someone who made the switch this year for one child, the prices are insane.

How was it clarified if you offered no numbers? I mean, if you’re going to derail the thread, do some research.

Huh? I did post tuition prices for several schools with higher tuition than WIS. My point was not to post a comprehensive list of tuition for every private school, but just to say that $33K/year is not even close to the highest tuition these days.

A process that takes years for everyone else takes months when you know the right people, I guess.

Domestic adoption generally only takes years for people who are waiting for a healthy white newborn.

And, as she even said in her announcement, she expected it to take longer, but adoption timelines can be totally unpredictable sometimes

She adopted a black baby, perhaps one from foster care?

Very helpful, thanks.

Just kidding.

Mayor is a good person. She is educated and has resources, so this is a lucky baby. But, to a city that is struggling with out of wedlock babies and single mothers, this is a terrible message to send. For most women in this city being a single mother is a garuanteed ticket to generational poverty. It strains the very schools that the mayor is trying to fix. And now the leader of this city has normalized this behavior. Not everyone is cheering.

What? Crazy and inappropriate comment.

The mayor can have as much flexibility in her schedule as she needs (perks of office) and has all her extended family in the area. I think she and the baby will be just fine.

+1000.

If she were taking more time off, people would say she's taking too much. Damned if she does; damned if she doesn't. Just goes to show how women are judged unfairly and unduly harshly for their parenting/career choices. Congrats to the Mayor, and best of luck as a new working mom.

Agree! The workplace needs to catch up to meet the modern family’s needs.

Can only imagine what the developers will bring the new baby as gifts. . .

Highly unlikely to be from foster care. The child is a newborn. It takes time to adopt from foster care; parents have the right to work a case plan, birth relatives get priority, and parental rights need to be terminated in court. And if she hadn't officially adopted the baby I don't think she would have presented it as such. I am guessing it's a private adoption.

Right - that was my point. It's not true that the process takes years for everyone else. People who adopt non-white babies (typically african american or hispanic) generally have a much faster timeline, so nothing was out of the ordinary about Bowser's timeline given that her baby isn't white.

My guess is it wasn't through foster care, simply because it's very unusual to adopt infants through foster care because of the timeline and court process for terminating parental rights. Not that it never happens, just that infants are more likely adopted through voluntary placements.

I'm reminded of Dan Quayle's comments about Murphy Brown.

Wow THANK YOU for the good laugh.

So true. Bowser has been so generous with them. I hope our tax dollars have earned her at least some baby Dior?

About 135,000 children are adopted in the United States each year. Of non-stepparent adoptions, about 59% are from the child welfare (or foster) system, 26% are from other countries, and 15% are voluntarily relinquished American babies.
