I can't answer that for VT, but at UVA there is a county by county report. Many counties to the west and south send one or no students to UVA. In contrast, Fairfax sends @ 676.

Admissions rates by county for all Virginia colleges

I wish someone could just sticky these links to the top of the forum. I think I post them weekly.

I think they are great too. I usually post them to show the GPA of the 2017 incoming class. That's, IMHO, the most important indicator as to whether or not your child will be able to get in.

It's 56% this year (2018). Here's what was sent to the guidance counselors. You can find this on college confidential. "I'm going to chime in with some info I received in an email last evening from VT sent to guidance counselors. Basically, the email states that a record number of applications were received, 32,000 for 6,200 available spots. The offer rate has dropped from a historical average of 70% to 56% this year. "he competition was high in every major, resulting in very few second-choice offers being available. Additionally, "Given the higher number of applicants and the lower number of available seats, many students who may have been offered admission in a previous year's cohort were not offered admission this year." There's more in the email, but you get the gist. I'm sort of, kind of, expecting we may see a rejection in our home come Monday evening.

Must be a basketball player - -otherwise it doesn't make any sense. Look at the SCHEV statistics. That GPA and ACT is far too low.

No mention of how many on the waitlist. It's got to be thousands.

The 3.2 is likely unweighted and out of a 4.0
VT uses weighted GPA out of 5.0 in their data set.

Neither score makes sense. Go to college confidential and look at the scores of those accepted, WL and rejected. The Schev says that the top 25% have a GPA of 4.21, median 50 at 4.00 and bottom 25% of 3.78. A 3.2 is highly unlikely, especially with a 26 ACT. But VT has a great basketball team.

DD is in a VT (not her first choice) with 3.9 unweighted GPA, 33 ACT, 1390 SAT, intended major BioChem. And if it matters, she's white, not a legacy, and from VA.

Her best friend is also in a VT (her first choice) as an intended English - Creative Writing major with a 3.3 unweighted GPA and 26 ACT. Best friend is white and also, obviously, from VA. She also has two older siblings who went to VT, but over 8 & 10 years ago.

An interesting reminder. If the yield is only 43% from Fairfax, it could be another indicator that they are looking for people who really want to be there.

We're talking about this year's admissions. There was a significant drop due to number of applications. The counselors were warned of it in advance.

I think that is to be expected. There are a ton who apply to both UVA and W&M and get into both.

That's the big story this year. So many students applied that the admit rate dropped to 56%. VT sent out a notice to all college counselors a few days in advance to warn them. Also, when you look at the admit rate for VT you have to factor in that most of those students self-select to apply there because both they and their counselors know the statistics needed to get in (same with W&M and UVA) so you can't compare the admissions rate to private universities or colleges. As it is for 2017, 2018, the top 25% GPA for entering students is a 4.21, median 50% a 4.00, and bottom 25% a 3.78 for Va Tech. I don't have a pony in this race but have tracked the statistics because I'm an educator and have two in UVA universities. I don't think my DD who got into UVA just two years ago would get in today. The statistics have changed that fast.
