Why? Maybe he had a terrible essay with misspelled words and bad grammar or was plagerizd; maybe his letters of recommendation hinted that he cheated in class or had a bad attitude; Maybe all he did was go to school with no extra curricular activities. There is more to admission credentials than Stats

Those stats are just about exactly average for VA Tech acceptances from my kid's FCPS high school. A white or Asian male applying for engineering probably needs higher. My kid with similar GPA and higher test scores would not even bother applying to UVA.

Congrats to those who got in.

Yeah, maybe all of that. But also maybe not. Seemed to expect not to get into UVA, but didn’t expect denied from Tech. I don’t know; those are good numbers, even if 2,000 other NOVA kids have similar. It’s great we have so many good options and good students. It could just as easily have been denied I stead of offered for one of my kids... so I feel it.

That's actually just an average GPA for Tech, nowadays. SCHEV has the GPAs of entering students in fall of 2017 at a 4.21 for top 25%; 4.00 for median 50%; and 3.78 for bottom 25%. There are kids on College Confidentials being turned down with 5.0 GPAs. http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp. Enter "Virginia Tech" and "update". When we toured 3 years ago, a 4.0 was expected for application to the engineering school with completed calculus with an A.

My son did not, so it's been a sad evening over here.

So sorry about this. This process is brutal.

My son did not get in. He had 3.52 UW GPA (HS does not weight) and 28 ACT so we knew it was a 50/50 shot. He will be sporting green and white next fall at Colorado State and is very excited about the school, so he wasn’t too crushed. (I have a feeling he’d have ended up there even if he did get into VT.)

Mine got in. It's where he wants to go. I still can't wrap my head around it being so selective. When I went to college, many decades ago, in VA, if we were top students, we went to go to UVA or W&M.

My kid and his friends are, like so many here, very good students, with 4++ gpas, high SATs, full AP course loads and great extracurriculars. A lot of them won't get into UVA. WTF do you have to do to get into a state college these days. . . .

Congrats and I totally understand what you are saying. I don't think our DD who got into UVA two years ago would get in today. It's changed that much statistically in just two years. VT is a great school. We toured but they were clear you needed at least a 4.0 for engineering. I still remember a poor woman in the Engineering Day see that figure posted and asked "How does one get a GPA higher than a 4.0?" and the air in the room sucked in. It's a rat race from beginning to end and a huge learning curve for the parents. I get irritated when I see ignorant posts about what some cruelly call "the lesser Virginia schools" having no idea the GPAs it now takes to get into GMU, JMU, VT, etc. For most good students in NoVA, W&M and UVA isn't going to happen.

I'm so sorry. If it's of any help, there's a lot of amazing kids with 4.5s, IBs, extracurriculars and amazing test scores who didn't get in. Read from page 27 to 40. https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/virginia-tech/2048435-virginia-tech-regular-decision-thread-p38.html

Lol- doh! Yes, He got in!

Why would this be a “doh” with a SAT score of 1240? That’s really low.

Take a breath, sweetie. “Doh” was due to the fact she stated her kid’s states but didn’t say whether or not he got in.

A weighted 3.92 is also low for VT now. Lots of kids with much better scores were waitlisted or rejected. https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/virginia-tech/2048435-virginia-tech-regular-decision-thread-p38.html

Maybe he wasn’t engineering?

Unrelated, sort of....

What I gathered from the College Confidential thread was you could have a much lower gpa and SAT if you were from OOS. Which sucks, but money talks.....
