How old will you and spouse be when empty nesters?

58 and 64 when the younger child leaves for college; 62 and 68 when she graduates if on a 4 year plan.

um, yes. That's what my in-laws did and produced 4 independent self reliant adults. Once in college, they could only come home for visits, or summers to work.
I will do something similar with my 4 kids. It fosters responsible thinking and choices when they don't have the perpetual safety net of mom and dad behind them

Agree. Five kids. Four grown. They left for college at 17/18. Graduated. Got good jobs. They live independently. Like adults should.

I mean agreed but that's not really getting "kicked out" its going away for school instead of commuting to school. Going home for 'breaks and visits' is called being in college, no? Its just normal. I was by no means "kicked out" and this was my model and I always knew I could go home if shit really hit the fan for me.

Same here. I lived at home for about six months after college, moved to an apartment for a year but then moved home for about a year so I could save up to replace my car, and then moved out for good.

I would be fine with my young adult kids living at our house as they get established and save money, so long as they are working and doing their part in contributing to the household, just as they would with roommates.

We will be 54 and 55 and when our youngest starts college. I look forward to taking some years to focus only on my career and not child-raising at that time, so no plans to retire until early 60s. Not working longer hours, just enjoying being able to focus in a different way than with two kids in the house.

47 & 49. It is right around the corner. August 2018 the last goes to college. We will continue to work and (continue) to travel, play golf, and play tennis. Though now much much more. My son will be playing a D1 sport, so lots of trips to see his games.

Some days we are still in shock about it all. Its funny but we go to some of his school events and some of the 30ish and 40ish parents appear so uptight and peevish that they look years older than we do. We don't feel old now and I hope we don't in 14 years either. We both plan on working until the days we die not because we need any money but because we feel it keeps us young.

So you were 53? Did you think you were in menopause? I was thinking I was in the clear by now!

Sorry if I was unclear. I/we are 53 right now and our youngest is 7. So in 14 years, our youngest will be 21 and my husband and I will be 67. That WOULD be a big surprise at 53. Although I admit that we were pretty startled 7 years ago!

Holy shit! I'm 39 and my mom and dad are 10 years older than you are. I could not even fathom them with a 17yr old. They were first time grandparents at 51.

We’ll both be 60 when our youngest is 22. I hope we have a weekend place between DC and Charlottesville by then and can spend more time out there hiking and enjoying nature.

Unless one or both kids go to college in a cool city, then maybe we’ll get an apartment there to air b&b and use for visits.

The funny thing is that my best friend was a grandmother at 35 while my husband and I were still having our children then (and #5 wasn't even on the horizon). Life is weird! We're actually all trying to work very hard so that #5 doesn't get too much attention, too much adulation from all of us. It will be hard not to focus too much on him beginning next year once he is the one and only child in the house full time. A little adversity is good.

We will be 40 if we don't have another. Seeing how much younger than average I'll be makes me consider a second.

We will be 50 and 51 when the youngest goes off to college. Hubby plans on retiring at 55. I plan on continuing to work. I would also like to launch a consulting business. We will definitely travel on our free time though!

59 and 54. Plan to work until 67.

51 & 52 when she goes to college. DH wants to retire at 60. He is active duty right now so that could happen. I will probably keep working to keep from killing him.

46 when he goes to college, 50 if he graduates on time. Of course, who knows what the future holds...he's only 3! We don't intend on any more kids though.
