Why are the British so rude?

We do not want him visiting UK! Please keep him to yourselves, you are the Ines who have elected him, we do not want him here.

^ones

Proving OP's point to be correct...

In my experience, the Brits are generally polite. Standoffish, maybe, by American standards, but not rude.

This is plain stupid. I guess utter stupidity may come off as rudeness in some contexts

On the one hand, Brits can be incredibly polite and never really tell you if they're upset, offended, etc. On the other hand, many, particularly the younger ones think Americans are obnoxious and full of themselves. They hate Trump and perhaps group us all together. The worst is when they hear things like us chanting 'USA USA USA.' They don't understand all the patriotic stuff and think we're arrogant. These are obviously vast generalizations and not always the case. What kind of snide comments are you hearing, OP?

So they are also stupid, good to know

And we don't want Theresa May, but we welcome her graciously. That's the difference.

I've met many rude Brits. And they paint Americans with an even broader brush, so there's that.

We have a lot of fools.

As do they.

It seems after Trump it's happening more. I'm finding it less easy to be like "Oh, just the Brits, whatever". Lately it seems to have moved into downright unbridled hostility

Yes, I think that's it.

Last week, I was in an airport lounge and smiled hello at an English man in the elevator. You know, like normal polite people do. He gave me a nasty look and said, "What do you want?" Bizarre.

Could have just been him, but - I travel a lot, and I've noticed a lot of this lately (and I'm an overweight woman, so obviously American).

Yeah. Very bizarre. I know there are cultural differences but... it's hard to overlook something like that. And that is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about, strangely hostile behavior

+1
Our family stayed in a B&B in England a couple of years ago. There were families from all different countries staying there and the owner was so nice to everyone... except us. He made a big point of making "American" digs/rude jokes about us. Very hostile person.

She loved the Irish, Scottish, and Welsh- and she said the English were the most stuck up, smug jerks anyone could ever run into. She said there was a lot of passive aggressiveness and a sense of being better than anyone else

As someone who has lived in Britain, I completely agree with this. The Scottish, especially, are wonderful people. The English, not so much. Very rude and condescending.

In all my travels, and with my mix of family, the worst are Germans, Australians, Americans. So loud and self absorbed.

"Racist"?? Oh, this is just getting more and more entertaining.

If I were a competitive person from Britain I would feel trapped in a euro country where they throw impediments in front of trying to achieve your dreams. I would feel like I was missing out by not being an American citizen .

HAHAHA, yes I am sure you would miss not being an American citizen who thinks the UK is a euro country....

NP. What continent do you think Britain is located on?

DP, what continent it is located on? Why none, it is an island and while us Continentals might think it is part of Europe, British people certainly do not.

So it's is own continent? Interesting. Someone really needs to notify the Royal Geographical Society. Time to redraw the maps

I didn't realize there were people as ignorant as PP. While the Brits might not "think of themselves" as being part of Europe, they most certainly are. They're a part of the European Union (though, not for long).

That's exactly it- basically comments about "obnoxious Americans". Which I can KIND OF understand in the context of cultural differences and not liking Trump, etc- however, when it moves over into "Americans have no sense of humor" "Americans have the worst food" "Americans all dress like slobs" I start to think it's just flat out unacceptable generalized rudeness

This.

I have a British friend who was constantly putting the US down. I always felt like reminding her that nobody forced her to move here, get a job, get a green card.....if it's so awful, why are you here?

OMG, I wonder if we have the same friend. I have one who is just like this - always saying rude and negative things about the US, where she now lives. I have been so tempted to tell her just to move back to the UK already. She'd be happier, I'd be happier.

How incredibly arrogant. I would have been tempted to say (especially to the Germans and Swedes), "No, you're doing just fine destroying your own countries, with no help from us."

I think it's just the Brits in general. This is exactly the strain of rudeness OP is talking about. Why move somewhere and complain about it 24/7 and make no effort to move elsewhere? That's when it becomes you just want to be a douche and complain
