Oops. Better check on those facts in British-occupied Africa. |
Um, you know the Brits compensated the slave owners for losing their slaves to abolition, right? Those slave owners reinvested their money in other colonial development schemes, which made them richer. And, yah, there were slaves in Britain pre anti slavery. The US had its own form of colonialism and empire building as well. |
Somerset v Stewart decision in 1772 - a hundred years before the US abolished slavery: The state of slavery is of such a nature that it is incapable of being introduced on any reasons, moral or political, but only by positive law, which preserves its force long after the reasons, occasions, and time itself from whence it was created, is erased from memory. It is so odious, that nothing can be suffered to support it, but positive law. Whatever inconveniences, therefore, may follow from the decision, I cannot say this case is allowed or approved by the law of England; and therefore the black must be discharged. Slavery had never been authorised by statute in England and Wales, and Lord Mansfield's decision found it also unsupported in common law.... |
Doesn't mean there were no slaves in Britain during that time. There were slaves serving as cooks, maids, etc in cities such as Bristol and Liverpool. |
In typical Brit fashion, they simply changed the terminology to suit their needs.
Slaves were no longer called slaves. They were now "indentured servants" or "colonial subjects" or delegated to the lowest class without mobility thus without actual freedoms. The British are the masterminds of spinning. |
British banter is the best. The Brits know how to incorporate humour into any political discussion. ![]() |
There were certainly slaves in Britain, but the UK school history books keep very, very quiet about it.

Why do they haaaate us?? (Because of assholes like this.) |

lol. This is a fantastic list. |
+1 Widespread passive aggression is only allowed and able to happen in places where ACTUAL aggression does not occur. And often results in even more antisocial behavior |
Well they are certainly more pleasant than the French toward Americans. If you enjoy a laugh, the Brits tend to enjoy one as well. |
Not in my experience. I've gotten a lot more friendliness from the French than from Brits |
We do not want him visiting UK! Please keep him to yourselves, you are the Ines who have elected him, we do not want him here. |
