| As a first year with a master's, my annual is $54,975. My gross bi-weekly is $2,114.20. After taxes, insurance, and the mandatory summer pay withdrawal, my net pay is $1,242.05 bi-weekly. My child's before/after care is $400 a month. My monthly student loan payment is $600. My rent and utilities for a one bedroom apartment come out to $1700 a month. Car insurance is $70 a month and I have a cheap $50 cell phone plan. No cable. No car note. I'm broke before I even get to the grocery store or gas station. I'd work a part time job if I had access to free childcare in the evenings. I just got a hardship forbearance on my student loans so that frees up enough cash to buy groceries. |
Something is weird with your numbers. If you gross 2114 your pay is already divided up by 26, thus making a summer pay withdrawal redundant. Your taxes should be reasonable as head of household/ single parent. Is health insurance really that highly on a family plan or self + 1? I agree with you that 55k is not enough to live on in the city, but you should be taking home more money than you are. |
| It doesn't matter how much is in the paycheck. At the end of the day they work hard to education the youth of our nation and deserve the retro pay and a raise. |
| How does the salary compare to that of a nurse/social worker? |
|
Doesn't matter how it compares. Pay has been totally flat for 4 years. These are professional positions and turnover helps no one. The teachers are asking for the same treatment the police and fire fighters got.
Let's stop telling teachers they aren't managing their budgets or taxes properly (condescending much?) and tell the mayor and Council they deserve a raise and retro pay. |
| Are private school teacher salaries significantly higher? What about charters? How does DCPS teacher salaries compare to Montgomery Co or Fairfax Co? |
Montgomery County salary scale http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/departments/ersc/employees/pay/schedules/salary_schedule_current(4).pdf Fairfax salary scale https://www.fcps.edu/careers/salary-and-benefits/salary-scales Private and charters are all over the map and not easily compared |
| DC Teachers were offered at the most a 4k bonus (no specifics on who would get the full 4k amount) and a 2% increase in 2018 and 2019. |
DCPS teachers are paid far above charter, private, or any of the counties around here. That doesn't mean a raise wouldn't be deserved or appreciated. |
Agreed! But it will be a point of comparison when negotiating a contract. Expect that City will look to those factors. |
| This is why teachers often leave the profession in the US. Can't blame them. |
And...have to deal with exponentially more demands, paperwork, behavioral problems and administrative requirements. No comparison. |
We get paid and have that money over 12 months. I don't get any extra money. After taxes and benefits it barely pays the mortgage, which is why I tutor. I also don't work at a school that gets the big bonuses. I don't want a bonus. I don't even want a huge raise I just need a cost-of-living adjustment so I can keep a roof over my head. |

There is a rally tomorrow 8-12 at Freedom Plaza before conferences.
Please come support! |
The only information that has been consistently reported is the lack of a contract with a demand for retroactive pay that is based on an adjusted salary scale to the same time it was implemented. Maybe it's your union that is misleading and misrepresenting you. |
