DCPS Teacher Strike?

Anonymous
Is it true that there is talk of the DCPS teachers going on strike?

Haven't heard anything.

There are some teachers (and many others) talking about participating in this event https://www.womensmarch.com/womensday/

on March 8 (one recommended action is a one-day strike)

I saw a tweet of a pic stating that:

DC teachers have worked 4 years without a contract, Mayor Bowser refuses to give retro pay and then has Mayor Bowser's contact info and twitter handle.

Doesn't sound like there is a contract signing any time soon, so I would say it's a possibility.
Ask your child's teacher perhaps?

No raise in 4 years? No retroactive pay? Extended day and school year? Spending hundreds in their own cash on supplies?

Our family is with you!

This DCPS teacher knows that negotiations are not going well, that's for sure. There were things that were promised that have not been followed through on. We have worked for 4 years without a contract, extended school day, year, etc. all of that information is true.

There was no movement forward on negotiations this past week. Contact your WTU rep for updated information on next steps.

Wow. Will there be information for parents this Friday?

Isn't negotiating a new contract at the top of the new chancellor's to do list?

It sounds like WTU positioning for negotiations - which is good and appropriate. Doesn't mean a strike is going to happen anytime soon. That's probably not in either side's interest.

The proposed raises (not even equal to a cost of living increase) and other compensation (in lieu of retroactive pay for 4+ years without a raise) are insulting, especially since things are booming in DC and there is a surplus. This is the second time negotiations will have failed since the contract expired. I say "will have failed" because no one supports the proposals and teachers are pretty fed up. I think in my 14 years in DCPS I have spent just as much time working under an expired contract than a current one. I'm not thrilled about a strike, but this has gone on too long.

Don't forget the overall increase of pay of pay during Rhees tenure when DCPS teachers became one of the highest paid teachers in the country!

Hopefully they go on strike and devos can issue vouchers for private school

DCPS teachers are 2nd highest paid in the nation. Many have have been bumped up for performance and don't need to wait for years to make highest salary.

I wouldn't want to work for years without a contract. I wouldn't do that to a contractor working for me. So why should I be OK with my kid's teacher being put in that situation?

Working in one of the most expensive markets with much of the worst traffic (if trying to raise a family in an affordable location). Trade offs!
