As a first year with a master's, my annual is $54,975. My gross bi-weekly is $2,114.20. After taxes, insurance, and the mandatory summer pay withdrawal, my net pay is $1,242.05 bi-weekly. My child's before/after care is $400 a month. My monthly student loan payment is $600. My rent and utilities for a one bedroom apartment come out to $1700 a month. Car insurance is $70 a month and I have a cheap $50 cell phone plan. No cable. No car note. I'm broke before I even get to the grocery store or gas station. I'd work a part time job if I had access to free childcare in the evenings. I just got a hardship forbearance on my student loans so that frees up enough cash to buy groceries.
Something is weird with your numbers. If you gross 2114 your pay is already divided up by 26, thus making a summer pay withdrawal redundant. Your taxes should be reasonable as head of household/ single parent. Is health insurance really that highly on a family plan or self + 1? I agree with you that 55k is not enough to live on in the city, but you should be taking home more money than you are.
