When & why did the whole 'han solo' style take off for women?

I never liked the look. I never like the big boots over jeans thing. The vest and scarf are also not my thing.

Now every time I see somebody: Han Solo is stuck in my head and I giggle.

I never was one to dress in "uniform". I'm turned off if every other woman is wearing it.

I saw a bunch too. Some looked cute and put together! I would wear that one day and the health goth the next. Do what you like. Half the people will hate and love it either way.

Not all, though. Not the ones who think they rock it. LOL. OP, most people gravitate toward people who can create their own style; it says a lot about a person. All positive. Sheeple? Not so much.

It's the "Hipster Effect: When all nonconformist look the same." There really is no individual style because we are a product of our environs.

I disagree. Certain women want to look alike. The other kind does not.

I've never understood the popularity of this style. Even if you have long willowy legs, why go out of your way to chop them in half visually?

I saw a girl wearing this outfit yesterday and it was 68 degrees out. I had to laugh at her.

Expand your horizons a bit, outside of the immediate realm of "I have to have these basic pieces because this is what such and such's blog says". It reeks of immaturity, at best.

+1 DC is so risk averse and terrified.

While I agree with nonconformists ultimately looking alike (see: goths, emo kids), hipsters aren't the ones wearing these outfits. Suburban mom =/= hipster.

And please stop wearing big arse boots when it is greater than 30 degrees.

+1,000

And the aviators. Enough of the aviators. They looked bad in 1992, they look worse now.

y3ah, I'm never taking mine off. been rocking them since I was a lifeguard in the mid 90s, repping the Sabotage video, what what. If it helps I don't own anything quilted or puffy or a vest for thathe matter at all.

What makes you think you are rocking them?

Rocking, as in synonym for "wearing", not "slaying ". I don't care who thinks I slay or rock or whatever, I dig my style it makes me truly happy, all my boots, bracelets, tees, jackets etc are mostly good memories of trips and stuff. My shades are something I feel like connects my style incarnations which I dig.

Just reading this thread now....it's hilarious. The above post especially. Criticizing what other people wear to such degree! Why do you care? How can you be so self conscious? People throughout the history of the world follow fashion...but you are above it all? Ha!

I think people are mostly criticizing (or mostly, amused by) the smug look on the faces of the Han Solo contingent. It is more obvious than you think.

Those are not true nonconformists. You described children. True nonconformists do their own thing, without relying on other people - isn't that the point of being an adult?

Can all you fashion critics post what kind of outfits you DO approve of? I am curious? I think this woman in the vest and jeans and boots looks pulled together, understated and appropriate for a busy mom or anyone of any age shopping or hanging out on the weekend.....almost any activity (besides business office or fancy dinner....)

Anonymous wrote:I attended an all girl's college in Virginia in the early 90s and I can tell you that hordes of my classmates dressed like Hans Solo then. Not so much the first picture that someone provided, but close: tight and dark bottoms (either leggings or jeans), tall flat boots, long-sleeved shirt (usually cream or white) and the black vest. It is NOT a new look... it's a "classic modern" look for the the equestrian, monied set. I think many women now have morphed that look into something looser/more hippish with the infinity scarves, and more colorful versions of the bottoms, plus looser jackets instead of the black vest. I wouldn't call that Hans Solo look, but maybe a derivative look.

I moved away from here after college but returned (well, to DC) about 8 years ago and I was actually SHOCKED to see everyone (young and old alike) still wearing the same look.

This is funny!

If you do your own thing, you can't go wrong. Don't rely on other people to dress - don't follow, and you won't look silly.
