| I just want my kid to go to college. Heck, if he's happy and succesful there it would even be ok with me if he went to a [scary voice] Below Average College. |

But what I really don't get are people that pay out of state or mediocre private when they could go to mediocre in state.
Examples I know of: Florida State full tuition out of state, East Carolina full tuition out of state, Vrginia Wesleyan full freight. Sorry but if my kiddo - you are going to Longwood or CNU. |
1. They have money and don't care. 2. They have grants and are paying close to instate. |
Way to aim high. Half fail out of college. But I guess you'll be able to squeeze a year or two of playing pretend on facebook about your "college kid". Good luck. |

Life is a series of sorting.
Sorted at birth ... sorted by high school you attend ... sorted by AP/honors vs normal classes ... sorted by college you attend ... sorted by major ... sorted by prestigious internships vs regular shit jobs ... sorted by where you move after college, top tier coastal city or boring suburban dump ... and on and on. |

LOL OP. My DH and I went to below average State U and we knew it and managed to do well because back then (we're 60) most everyone we knew went to whichever university was closest. I totally agree with you that people here simply can't admit it. I work at a local, expensive university. I happened to ask the question of the Chairman of the Board yesterday about the rankings and why anyone would want to pay for private when the school isn't ranked well. He went on and on about "how the rankings don't matter, blah, blah, blah". I just had to laugh.
You can bet since my DH and I went to sub-par U...we sent our only child to Princeton. That is the American Dream for us. I wouldn't pay the money to go private for "average". I don't know why people do.

| I think I've lost count of the trolls. My kid is OOS and full freight. Turned down CMU and GT because the program at her school for her major is superior. Duh!!! |
| Most of my friends are thrilled to tell me that "junior is going to XYZ University". Some of the schools are highly regarded and others aren't so much, but the parents all seem to exude the same happiness. No one goes about trying to justify why it's a good school. I don't know what circles the OP runs in, but I don't experience what OP seems to think she's hearing. OP- Do you ask them why they chose that school? Or do your make disparaging remarks to your peers when they tell you what school their child is attending so they feel that they need to explain their choice?? Maybe you should just say "congratulations to junior" and leave it at that. |
| You must live in a bubble pp or your kids must go to so-so public h.s. because everyone in DC I've ever heard explains why UMD's Honors Program is so much better than an Ivy or something else equally ridiculous. And, I don't ask because I didn't go to a great school myself. But, since I'm rich, people often assume I went to something fancy. |
Seriously, when you get out of dc (and similar cities) no one gives a damn about prestige. Most kids are going to their state universities an doing just fine. In fact, take a look at the colleges attended by major CEO's. I know that dcum only cares about $$, so let me put it this way. The majority of people I know who make 7 figures or more (my dh included) went to schools that would be berated on this site while the people I know who attend Ivy's or slac's are making considerably less and at 50 still pay off loans. This constant need to one up and put others down is one of the worst things about this area. |
Well for us private schools were all cheaper than state schools due to the fact that private schools offer much more generous merit aid, so... |
Let me guess - marine biology at Coastal Carolina. |
I want my kids in DC or a "similar city". Smart and successful people want to be around smart and successful people, hence: DC, SF, LA, NYC, Chicago, Boston, Seattle. Why would anyone give a shit what commoners think? Seriously. |
We are wealthy and our kids go to a good school. Maybe I just don't give people the vibe that they need to justify where their kids go to school. You sound caught up in an unhealthy way. |
