Why can't folks that send their kids to average colleges ever admit it?

I want my kids in DC or a "similar city". Smart and successful people want to be around smart and successful people, hence: DC, SF, LA, NYC, Chicago, Boston, Seattle.

Why would anyone give a shit what commoners think? Seriously.

Your trolling skills are subpar.

Examples I know of: Florida State full tuition out of state, East Carolina full tuition out of state, Vrginia Wesleyan full freight.

Sorry but if my kiddo - you are going to Longwood or CNU.

Well for us private schools were all cheaper than state schools due to the fact that private schools offer much more generous merit aid, so...
Well, they couldn't have been too highly ranked private schools or there wouldn't have been "merit" aid or financial aid. Privates are not all created equal.

Obviously. That was the point I was responding to- the question of why send your kid to mediocre private school instead of mediocre state school.

Reading is important.

Because in the DC area what you do, who you know and where your kid goes to college is how people size you up. Unless your like us and your kid chooses west point and then they look at you horrified (think war and conservative)

Why is it so important to you that they do?

What? West Point is a top engineering school and produces many, many leaders in government and business. A young person who graduates from West Point has to be outstanding in academics, physical fitness, and leadership. Most kids would have trouble meeting the standards there, or at any of the service academies.

I understand a grant or aid. Then just choose what you want. But for the examples I mentioned the parents told me they were tapping a HELOC to pay $40k at FSU and ECU and had done so for an older child to go to Va Wesleyan.

Fixed. Anyone who denies this to be true is in denial.

Not really - if you are rich, fit, stylish, attractive and socially skilled (gracious/sophisticated/well traveled) nobody cares about where you went to school, or where your kids go to school, or how you got there. These attributes trump all when it comes to the A list that OP seems obsessed with.

If you're all of those things you likely were conditioned at fine primary and secondary schools and ended up at no worse than UVA or George Washington or some tiny private outside of Philly.

Dear God people. A school ranked #32 in the NATION is not an "average" school! There are over 2,000 schools in the country!

Virginia Tech, for example, has a 70% acceptance rate. 1/4 fail out before graduating.

What has a kid accomplished getting into a school like VTech, or even less selective schools with de facto open door admissions? Nothing, yet. If you have money or take out loans, any kid with a pulse can go to a university. Parents of average kids need to quit doing gymnastics dressing up things that just aren't impressive.

Have you looked at the average GPA and test scores of incoming Freshman? VT is far from open door admissions.

Your subject line should read "folks who send," not "folks that send."

This is a DMV forum. DMV is not the rest of the nation, it's an elite bubble. Thw average bar here is far higher than it is in Kansas.

Personally, I can't stand DC and would love to see my kids end up in a smaller size city which in my experience tends to be more laid back and offer a better quality of life.
