Would you buy a Range Rover?

I have to assume that most , not all, of these people who buy or lease these cars are not stupid. They are smart enough to have good careers and afford this lifestyle.

RR is also very popular among the entertainers crowd. It's a nice truck-like vehicle with a conservative but handsome exterior and luxurious interior. The brand has pedigree and a decent amount of exclusivity (relatively, anyway). I've heard horror stories about repair bills, but I guess it's not an issue within the warranty period, anyway.

1. People unrestrained by price

2. People who don't want to sacrifice performance and luxury

3. People who don't want to deal with gasoline, or want to reduce their footprint, etc

4. People who clearly don't care about #3 as much as they do #2,

I am not sure how this makes them different than the RR folks who share #1 and want an SUV. You can also argue that the performance of the RR is far beyond that of other SUVs - you can drive it in water up to the windows, etc. You can also make an argument that it is the most luxurious SUV - this sounds a lot like #2

We have RR and looked into Tesla. Not there yet because it's not a long-haul car. I view it as a city car because of the mileage range isn't long enough for any real road trip. And I don't want to sit at a rest area in Pennsylvania waiting for my car to charge. iWe still have pretty young kids and Tesla not right for us yes. Plus the combustion thing in the early days was a bit disturbing. Also, electric cars can still consume fossil fuels, depending on the source of power (e.g., coal) that provides electricity to any given outlet.

It's surprisingly pleasant. Gives you a chance to stretch your legs.

"There are a number of definitions for an SUV.[6] Most government regulations simply have categories for "off-highway vehicles," which in turn are lumped in with pickup trucks and minivans as light trucks."[6] The auto industry has not settled on one definition.[6]

Nevertheless, four-wheel-drive SUVs are considered light trucks in North America (and two-wheel-drive SUVs up to the 2011 model year[7]) where they were regulated less strictly than passenger cars under two laws in the United States, the Energy Policy and Conservation Act for fuel economy, and the Clean Air Act for emissions.[8] Starting in 2004, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began to hold sport utility vehicles to the same tailpipe emissions standards as cars.[9]

Many people question "how can an SUV be called a truck?"[10] Although the original definition of the "light truck" classification included pickups and delivery vans, usually SUVs and minivans are included in this category because these vehicles are designed to "permit greater cargo-carying capacity than passenger carrying volume.[10] Manufacturing, emissions, and safety regulations in the U.S. classify "an SUV is a truck"; however, for local licensing and traffic enforcement, "an SUV may be a truck or a car" because the classification of these vehicles varies from state to state.[11] For industry production statistics, SUVs are counted in the light truck product segment.[12]

Not OP, but I actually wanted a Honda Pilot until I went and looked at the 2016 model. Ugh. They really have made it bland and minivan looking now. It's actually gotten worse with every update since the original body style in my opinion. Same with the Pathfinder. They both look like minivans now.

That's because people want them to function as a minivan in every possible way except - God forbid - LOOKING like a minivan.

just to correct an earlier comment in this thread....land rover makes both range rover and land rovers. range rovers can be extremely expensive. We bought an LR a few years ago, and it was in the same pricerange as an Acura MDX. The LR had some features we liked more. I personally don't like driving the LR bc i think they are pretentious, but in reality, it cost about the same as an MDX (where are almost a dime a dozen in bethesda)...

Why not get a BMX X5 with the bigger engine? Mine drives like a dream and is very reliable.

X5 doesn't have the same type of conservative yet modern design that the RR or a GL Benz has.

The LR3 screams "I want to snub my nose at you but can't afford the real thing". Plenty of better cars in that price range.

I find it hilarious that RR's are still considered luxurious when they are 100% owned and made by an Indian company.

Considering the anti-indian sentiment on DCUM i'm sure lots on here will hate to hear this.

It's true that Tata owns Land Rover, but cars are still manufactured in UK (not that that's exactly confidence installing given the historical issues with reliability.) We will definitely trade in before warranty expires!!!

Anonymous wrote:In the market for a family SUV. DH and I both love the Range Rover minus all the maintenance problems. We can afford it. Since it is unreliable, we would probably also buy another more reliable SUV for when RR would be in the shop.

Would you buy the Range Rover knowing you will probably buy another family car due to RR's unreliability?

Are you and DH insecure? Why do you need an overpriced over engineered gas guzzling vehicle?

Or do you believe the ads on TV and think you bill zipping around the region with no traffic while wearing evening wear?

I love this

I'm a car guy. I think the people who make big deals out of what qualifies as a truck are the true idiots.

I don't make a big deal out of it, I just live on a farm and drive, you know, an actual truck. When you talk about your truck and them walk out to your SUV you just lose all your man credibility with me. And I am a woman. I will from that point forward always assume you tell fish stories. And if you can't take a man at his word, he isn't much of a man. Just saying.

Did you hear that PP? Crazy farm lady doesn't think you're a man!

Heehee, lets hope the day doesn't come when her son or son-in-law doesn't drive a uni-body SUV and casually utter the words "my truck" at the thanksgiving table.

Keep telling yourselves that. What really proved my point? The thread the other day when some lady couldn't back her SUV out of some charity dropoff place, asked some poor black guy sitting on a bench to move and lost her shit when he didn't, and called the cops complaining about how the world doesn't get out of her vehicle's way. She kept referring to her "truck." Yep. Had that one pegged.

Next time you want to call your SUV a truck, ponder a bit -- would I rather be more like crazy farm lady, or dropoff police mom? I am pretty happy where I am.

The E-class wagon looks a heck of a lot nicer and is going to be better to drive and park, if you are looking to blow a lot of money on a "Family" car.

This.

rich people with taste buy E63 S AMG wagons.
