Would you buy a Range Rover?

If you want to feel good about your environmental footprint, you can buy a Prius, a Leaf, a Volt, etc.

If you need 4WD, you can drive a Subaru

The quality of the RR is that nothing else looks like it, its expensive and if you are buying one, you aren't all that torn up about repair costs. Drive one of your other cars.

they are identical in that regard. Nobody is mistaking your Tesla for a Camry and nobody is mistaking your RR for a Honda Pilot

I think it says more about you than about Teslas that you think the only reason to buy one is as a status symbol.

A Tesla is the only electric-only car with a range comparable to a gasoline vehicle, and it has better driving performance than pretty much any car on the road. You can say that a Tesla isn't worth the price, but you can't say that it provides no additional performance or capabilities compared to the alternatives.

So the Tesla niche is

1. People unrestrained by price

2. People who don't want to sacrifice performance and luxury

3. People who don't want to deal with gasoline, or want to reduce their footprint, etc

4. People who clearly don't care about #3 as much as they do #2,

I am not sure how this makes them different than the RR folks who share #1 and want an SUV. You can also argue that the performance of the RR is far beyond that of other SUVs - you can drive it in water up to the windows, etc. You can also make an argument that it is the most luxurious SUV - this sounds a lot like #2

You can't pull a trailer with a Subaru,Prius, volt, etc.

The main reason to set a Tesla is the Ludicrous speed button.

No its b/c you get 240 miles between charges. The next best full electric gets 80-90 miles.

I had an expensive and unreliable car once. It was a Jaguar and NEVER AGAIN. I went with the Lexus Suv. And very happy with it. Never in the shop. It does not have the cachet of the RR but neither does it have the show off and maintenance

I love the Mercedes GL series with the 3rd row seating.
Style and comfort but probably not the most reliable.

CR said Tesla was the best car they ever tested-- it "broke" their ratings system. And against that the best thing to say about RR is you could risk your life by driving into water, but at least your car would stay dry?

I can understand that for some people a RR is a status symbol, but it's a stupid one because pretty much the only reason to buy one is if you think it's a status symbol. It's like claiming that the reason you bought a Gucci belt is that it's actually better at holding up your pants, when in fact it's more likely to fall apart in a couple of years.

If you buy a car like you buy a washing machine, go right ahead and depend on CR for guidance. The fact that a car could break their ratings system indicates that it was a defective ratings system to begin with, perhaps not a "recommended" ratings system by CR's own standards. Fighting for relevance in a modern world where people more and more depend on word of mouth rather than centralized authorities, CR has been trying to be edgy, not shying away from publicity stunts and knee-jerk reactions like how they publicized the door handle failure on the Tesla they were testing.

I am not the PP, but if we are comparing claims and benefits of cars, it's fair game to brag about the performance prowess of Tesla in terms of acceleration, just as it is to brag about RR in terms of off-road capabilities.

If you don't like the RR, that's fine, it's not made for everyone. No car is made for everyone. There are, however, a multitude of reasons for RR to be such a desirable luxury SUV aside from being a status symbol. You don't become a status symbol from claiming to be one. Acura likes to claim that they make a luxury car, look how well that's working out for them while not actually making a car that measures up to other luxury brands.

I am a huge fan of Elon, a FAR more interesting person than Steve Jobs ever was. But his talent is not without company - there are many others like him, and its important to recognize that.

Yes, the GL is nice. And quite a presence as well if you get it in white with the chrome bits.

Still, though, the RR has a recognizable and distinctive shape. I'd say the closest comparison would be the G wagen, another "classic" truck that is very popular and cross-shopped against the RR.

Cross shopped against the real RR, NOT the Sport. The Sport is basically a nice Honda Pilot (but without the reliability).

Would you buy the Range Rover knowing you will probably buy another family car due to RR's unreliability?

What an idiot...

For the money, I'd get a Tesla. Hands down.

Even to the point they are willing to buy a backup car for when it breaks down! I'm with 10:13..this has to be some weird sort of brag post. If not then the OP would buy pretty much any polished turd just to one up the neighbors. If that's the case why not get a couple of nice shiny Harley Davidsons to go along with your Range Rover? Those are pieces of shit too, but also inspire the same sort of mouth drooling lemming "shut up and take my money" behavior.

DH is pretty frugal with most things but loves cars and watches. He is obsessed with saving but then is willing to drop 120 on an unreliable nice SUV.

No one who buys a $120k car is frugal. Period.

I don't get why people would buy a crappy driving SUV over a wagon.

The E-class wagon looks a heck of a lot nicer and is going to be better to drive and park, if you are looking to blow a lot of money on a "Family" car.

Heck if it was about performance you'd buy an x5/m
