16 and a half with a steady boyfriend. We parted ways halfway through freshman year. I absolutely don't regret it because we really did love each other in the sweet, comfortable, sometimes dramatic but in retrospect uncomplicated way that normal 16 year olds can love each other.
What I do regret is that we were so connected at the hip that I didn't spend as much time with friends as I could or should have. I was very lucky to have college friends who forgave me for going home each weekend the first half of freshman year, and then welcomed me with open arms when I became a true part of their community after the break up. I don't have a daughter but if I do or did, I would emphasize the importance of safe sex AND not putting all of your eggs in one basket socially. |

I was 16. My boyfriend was also 16. We were together for 6 months before and a year after. I do not regret having sex so early, nor do I regret the person I had sex with. He was not an amazing lover, but I wasn't an amazing lover either. We learned things together and it was sweet. He'd had sex once before with someone else.
I have a daughter now, and honestly, I would kind of prefer her to have sex BEFORE she goes away to college, if only because I have seen so many kids go completely wild the second they escape their parent's supervision - whether that's food, alcohol, sex or all of the above. Ideally, DD would lose her virginity to a nice boy we've all known for many years, and they have a stable relationship that ends because he's selected to be on the team of people who colonize Mars or something. |
