Really don't like seeing the signs on Christian churches offering Seders

Anonymous
Wow. So many angry defensive Christians. Or are you the same poster, posting over and over again calling people a@@holes?

BTW, I'm the one who "won for being dense!"

I find it patently ridiculous to host a seder and then argue that the "meaning of Passover doesn't really play into it."

Huh?

I don't have a "need to feel constant offense" - I am just responding, as a Jew, to a post about Christians hosting seders.

Those were my honest feelings. Sorry you don't like them.

PP here, I'd like to add that Christians have had a long history of persecution of Jews and propaganda surrounding their rituals -- see blood libel -- and that is why this is a touchy issue.

To ignore that history, or downplay it, is to show an insensitivity to the Jewish people, who believe me, are very educated in their own history of suffering. Especially since Passover is a holiday that for the Jewish people is a remembrance of our suffering throughout time.

Jesus didn't have a Bar Mitzvah, so for a Christian to take part in this would be an appropriation.

And you know this how? It's my understanding that very little is known about Jesus' teenage years.

Gee...ever think this is why we focus on what we DO know about; ie his birth, his adult life and death? Are you an expert on Christianity too or just the self appointed defender of Jewish purity or something? I'm confused. Boy, the need to take offense knows no bounds for some of you. Amazing.

Dear asshole:

You picked a fight by insulting Christians. You got them mad. Mission accomplished. Why don't you go pick the wings off flies now?

Signed, Anybody who was expecting an actual interfaith dialogue, and ran into your buzz saw of outraged injury.

No one is ignoring that history. We are well aware of it and MANY of us are appalled by it. I wasn't around during WWII though, so sorry but there was nothing I could do there. What I have tried to do here is explain this link between our faiths - something that could be a bridge and an opportunity for constructive dialogue if you could stop being a reactionary child for two seconds. So PP, yes you do win for being dense. Either that, or for selectively understanding only what suits your predefined narrative. If Christians are getting defensive, it's because you and a few others PATENTLY REFUSE to try and understand what we have been saying. You were clearly looking for a fight, NOT "understanding.". Don't whine because you got the fight you asked for.

Who the fuck is ignoring this history? We are talking about seders, you self-righteous jerk.

NOT A SINGLE CHRISTIAN HAS INSULTED A JEW OR JUDAISM ON THIS THREAD. I REPEAT: NOT ONE CHRISTIAN HAS INSULTED JEWS OR JUDAISM ON THIS THREAD. MEANWHILE, YOU GUYS HAVE INSULTED CHRISTIANS ENDLESSLY ON THIS THREAD. Sorry to shout, but you're not just a jerk, you're also incredibly dense. But I guess wanting to pick a fight means you ignore logic, right?

Everybody who wanted to talk with you seriously has bailed on this thread. I'm outta here now, too.

PS: I should add that calling you personally an asshole, or other posters assholes on a personal level, doesn't count as insulting Jews or Judaism. The fact of being an "asshole looking to pick a fight" has nothing to do with your religion. Assholishness is apart from religion or belief.

So is the fact of being a stupid idiot, which spans religion and atheism. Although it's really hard to tell if you're only pretending to be stupid, or if you are really as dumb as a brick.

Yes, I'd like to see one of the angry Jews defend the use of the term "Christianist" (whatever that means) or try to argue that it wasn't meant to insult and be offensive. And then you wonder why we are upset about your angry, childlike mentality. When people try to engage you respectfully on a sensitive topic, and this is how you respond well, yes, people do tend to get upset. Is this NEWS to you or something?

Thank God I have many Jewish friends and know that IRL most Jews are not anything like the bratty children represented on this thread.

OP's opening gambit ("icky", "talk me down") should have been a tipoff that she wasn't seeking interfaith dialogue here. Well, live and learn. I offered the 2nd thoughtful response. Guess that makes me a chump.

Agreed. I am Catholic and I have found MY Jewish friends to be more understanding than some other Protestants I know frankly. And I've asked them about this issue and none took offense. I got some questions, and learned quite a bit, but none of the vitriol displayed here. And thankfully none of them hold me personally responsible for the historical persecution of their people either.

Same here. I guess it was a dog whistle to those who agree with her.

I'm an atheist, but I get invited to church functions sometimes. A couple of years ago, not wanting to offend anyone, I went up to take the communion wafer. What was really weird was that some of the Catholics I was with actually got offended. No idea why this would be.

Hahaha. Of course they did and they were right. As a Protestant married to a Catholic for ages, I'm not welcome to take communion in a Catholic Church. If you truly mean to not offend, you should ask if there's anything you should know beforehand -- like that it is REALLY DISRESPECTFUL to take communion in a Catholic church if you are not a confirmed Catholic. You are permitted to go up for a blessing (cross your arms over your chest to signal blessing instead of communion).

PP, just to play devil's advocate, if this story is true the people that poster was with should have told that person the rules. But really, an atheist goes up for Catholic communion? I doubt it. Pretty sure that poster was trolling so let's don't feed it, okay? We have enough on our hands here.

Wow, I am the Jewish being called "asshole," "jerk," "dense" and "stupid idiot."

If you think this is a way to promote interfaith discussion, you are wrong. 8:09 and 8:12 -- are you the same poster? I think you need anger management class.

I never once said anything anti-Christian in my posts, I was simply trying to help you understand why some Jews might be offended by a Christian seder. Not sure why that is "insulting" to Christians.

Your unwillingness to even acknowledge that Jews might be be legitimately uncomfortable with this speaks volumes.

FWIW -- a brief survey of my Jewish friends ALL agreed with me. They also said I was nuts trying to convince strangers on DCUM that Jews have a right to feel this way.
