I feel bad, but I really want to get rid of our cats

Op why did you get cats when you live in an apartment? They are probably cooped up and bored. Yes, I know some people think it is better to keep cat indoors but they are animals! They were made to live outside! They would be happier roaming the yard and neighborhood.

Don't get a pet if you leave in an apartment!

I don't agree, I have had my cat for 13 years, 9 and a half of which I lived in an apartment. She is happy and well behaved.

I don't agree either. There are plenty of ways to keep cats stimulated and entertained if you live in apartment. Just sitting on the window sill and looking out the window (we call this "kitty cable!") will keep them entertained for hours!

Dumb.Dumb.Dumb. Outdoor cats have a half the lifespan of indoor.

Not a good thing, since they hunt and kill native bird species.

I know this is an old thread, but....if you must rehome your cat, please do it while they are young. It is not that hard to find a home for a young cat, but your 10 year old cat is probably going to have some trouble finding a new home. make up your mind and do it, or commit to a long term. Or don't do it in the first place.

I can see both sides if this- I adopted a cat when I lived in a group house while in college. A few years later I moved into a 1BR apartment- kitty did fine but did not get enough exercise. Finding an apt with a good view was key and one of my requirements, it had huge windows and overlooked a park. But now that we're in a house again, I think she's happier, and has lost the excess weight. I'd love to let her outside but she's been an indoor cat for so long she'd either get run over by a car or beat up by a neighbor cat. Tough to do the indoor/outdoor thing in an urban area.

my cat was laying down in one of my boxes and when i told it to get off, it just looked at me w/ a "f u who cares look," squinted it's eyes at me, tilted it's head up and down to the side, and meowed back in a curt manner. this is what i mean when i say that cat doesn't listen to me. all day long all i say is get off or get out. when i walk in the room i hear a big thump on the floor bc she knows she's about to get in trouble if she doesn't jump off and onto the floor. it's like talking to a one yr old all the time. this cat is 10-15 yrs old and still going strong, no health issues. it just can't climb fences anymore but IT CAN CLIMB EVERYTHING ELSE. when i call it's name sometimes, it turns it's head to look back at me, squints it's eyes, and turns back around the other way to ignore me. i understand everything that cat says and that cat understands everything i say, and i know it's different distinct sounds, and when it says yes or no, since i've been around it 10-15 yrs. it just listens half the time and has selective hearing. it doesn't care about anything except going outside to play and eating food. i guess cat is just being a cat. sigh. right now it's prob sittin in the backyard basking in the sun. lol.

if your cats are puking all the time they are most likely having an allergy to the food your feeding them, try grain free, kinda crappy to have them for 8 years then decide you don't like them, invest in a laser light tire them out before bedtime by PLAYING with them and they wont be so crazy!

Im sorry but I volunteer alot of my time to helping cats and I see pets dumped all the time because there not a kitten or puppy anymore and yes they all require attention, what happened to enjoying your pet because they love you and want your attention, you are there world. Yes changing a litter box and feeding them is time- did you not make a commitment to them when you got them and they were babies?

People would dump there kids too Im sure if it was allowed...

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Um if cats are fed and not starving they are far less likely to hunt birds, what about the mice they kill, would you like those to be left alone too? Maybe you should get invested in helping community cats that are hungry or find out about TNR programs, you are very misinformed-just sayin

Actually, there was a study with night cameras where cats just killed for no real reason. They didn't eat them because they were well fed.

It's fine for cats to kill birds. It's a survival of the fittest food chain.

One of my cats (short haired) sheds like crazy. It's unbelievable. I now comb him whenever I think about it. He vomits much less since I've increased his brushings.

One of my kitties was using Feline Pine just fine for a few weeks and then all of a sudden he started peeing outside the litter box. I bought multiple different litter brands and set up litter boxes in a row (I even tried newspaper). My kitties seemed to prefer Dr. Elsey's cat litter. I haven't had any issues with the litter box since making the switch. So perhaps people with cats pooping/peeing every where could experiment with different brands.

Anyone have any ideas on how to protect wood floors from cats and dogs? I heard about a polyurathane coating which I can self apply to the wood to help a little. I'm also debating what type of widow coverings to get. I think my cats will destroy both shades and curtains. I have heard that wood blinds get less damaged, but thought it would look a little ugly....
