I feel bad, but I really want to get rid of our cats

Anonymous
Things we did to fix our cat's bad behaviour.

We play with them at least 20-30 minutes a day.

Fixed times for feeding.

Clean the litter box when we wake up and before we go to bed.

Feed them wet food twice a day and leave dry food (just enough) between feedings when we're not home.

Got them boxes to hide and watch.

A cat condo that they can "perch" on. Kinda funny to see them on different levels, watching us watch tv.

Brush them every day (they're Persians).

No more pooping/peeing outside litterbox, meowing at night, etc.

Oh for gods sakes. If your cat is diabetic you do not have to treat the diabetes. It is fine to let him die or put him to sleep. If u reeeaaallly like yr cat and want to give him insulin shots, fine, but u r under no obligations to do so.

Don't get cats if all u have is a tiny apartment and no yard! Of course they are going crazy they are cooped up 24 7.

I have allergies and asthma. My pet allergies got worse when I hit adolescence. I basically had a constant cold and cough. My mom insisted on keeping the cats and dog and even went to extreme health measures to keep them alive. I think it is bizarre that she valued their health over mine.

I totally agree here, we have two 13 year old cats and a 17 year old and we count the days. I love animals but if I never see a cat again it will be too soon after they go. They are the worst pets ever, the things never die and the resources they take to keep them going is insane. I wish we could coral them all up and ship them out.

I feel the same way. I have wonderful cats, very beautiful, smart and well behaved. They still drive me crazy with all the maintenance. Worse than a dog really. A dog does not sneak into your closet to pee or puke. That said, make a decision to move them along while they are still young. OP, sorry, I feel it too!

This thread is a YEAR OLD. I suspect OP has made a decision by now...

Call Pet Smart and PetCo. - they have volunteer cat groups that are given cages in the entrance for mature rescue cats that need homes. The rescue groups come and take the cats; ensure they've had all shots; heal them if abused; and then try to find good homes for them through free placement at PetSmart and PetCo. PetCo and PetSmart are not in charge of this - they just give the space - so you will have to ask for the resuce league contact phone no.

I haven't read all the posts, but here are some suggestions to deal with annoying cats:

1. Let your cats spend some time outside. I think a lot of these inside cats are just downright bored!

2. We put our cat in the basement at night (where his litterbox is) so he doesn't wake us up. Otherwise he would cry in the middle of the night and get us up. No way I'm dealing w/ that after two kids.

3. I love cats, but if your cat is peeing and pooping all over the house, there's a problem and maybe it's time to put your cat down. IMO, that is not a minor problem.

i think every cat is different. (like humans are different.) some cats are able to stay in the house, some cats NEED to go outside, or they will go STIR CRAZY in the house. maybe some of these complainers have the "stir crazy, need to go outside" type cats. some cats will just get down right bored inside, no fresh air, and a kitchen counter to stare at all day. cat is just being a cat.

u can (cheaply; from home depot) build a large outdoor enlcosed cat patio if u have an apartment or something.

my friend's cat is CONTENT staying indoors 24/7. otoh, my cat NEEDS TO BE INDOOR + OUTDOOR. when she wants out, she WANTS OUT. and when she wants in, SHE WANTS IN. she will YOWL until she gets her way. (sigh.)

if u have the "cat that needs to go outdoor" and u live in an apartment, WATCH OUT. trouble heading ur way.. i would not consider getting a pet unless i had a backyard. we have a big backyard that is fenced and locked, and cat just lounges there all the time, and comes in the house when it wants to. no dogs can get in our yard, and our cat has no desire to escape the yard. she did when she was little, but no longer has the curiosity to. she is unable to climb fences now, lol.

there are no big wild animals here (coyotes, foxes etc.) (we live in the ghetto lol) the only thing i have seen here is oppossums, skunks, raccoons, wild cats, and squirrels. wild cats haven't been around lately. my cat once got in a bad fight and had an abscess and puss in it's mouth i had to take to the vet that cost me ~50$.

i have to find another house to live in, therefore, i have to find one w/ a backyard.

also, i think some cats might get jealous of kids or other animals, and therefore, they act out. or they might have health issues. i think feeding them high quality pet food (wet and dry) is key. also grooming them regularly and brushing their teeth is key. also, i buy the natural no scent litter for my cat.

i have tried getting rid of her twice, but no one will take it, lol. so i still have it. i can't wait till she dies. lol. i have fantasized about posting her on craigslist for 400$ bc i don't want it to go to a pitbull owner, labratory, or abuser, and no pitbull owner, lab, or abuser will pay 400$ for it lol. it is a good pet overall, but i get annoyed w/ it ruining my boxes by sitting on it, hair everywhere, and all the money and time that goes into vet, food, litter, grooming. i don't know what i was thinking when i was in my mid twenties lol. i've had that cat for almost 15 yrs and it's been treated w/ premium cat care it's whole life. (premium food, regular visits to vet, i brush it's teeth, groom it, on a regular basis, ETC.)

that cat knows what i'm saying and won't listen, it talks back, it argues w me, and it is demanding. sigh. lol. i can't wait till it passes away. lol. nobody would take it. my requirements were that the next person has to take care of it like me. brush it's teeth, bathe it twice a year, premium cat food, vet visits, clip it's nails, have it be a indoor/ outdoor cat w/ secure fencing, no abuse, ETC. but no one wanted it. so i'm stuck w it again. i even offered a LIFETIME SUPPLY of food, litter, supplies, and vet costs. still no one wanted it. oh well. so here i am. lol.

good thing that cat isn't the devil cat like some others. it went thru phases where it pooped everywhere, but that only happens a few times a year. it was prob mad about something. i don't know, i would sum up that cat as bossy, demanding, and has little personality. it's like a one year old in a furry cat suit. well, at least it lets me give it a bath, and it leaves me alone a lot; i just need to let it outside. oh and u have to play w your cat sometimes, like w that stick w/ the string and feather at the end, get them real tired... lol. sigh.

if u guys don't want to do it, just train your kids to do it. but after this, prob, no more pets for me. i have fantasized about getting a big dog, but nevermind, i don't feel like walking it, and the vet bills, food, i hate poop and pee, ruining my stuff, ETC. maybe in another lifetime... lol. i was a pet lover and have donated a lot of money to animal rescues. lol. (well, still donate money to animal rescues.)

well, wish me luck w my cat. all it wants is food, and to go outside an play. nothing else. lol. sigh. sometimes i have thought about getting it a friend, but i will prob go twice as crazy. at least the cat leaves me alone, when it is: a) outside, b) too tired inside c) w/ my mom. (thank goodness.)

I have not read all of the posts here, but it makes me want to go home and give my 11yr old kitty a snuggle. I can understand the frustration but hope y'all don't get cats again. I've heard that the intelligence level of cats is the equivalent of an 18 month old human, so it's no wonder they act like perpetual toddlers! Honestly, my kitty can be a bit of a pill 5am wake up calls anyone?) but I love that she still has energy and a personality. That said, she uses her litter box without fail and if she's puking, it's usually because there's a hairball issue and means I have to be more diligent about brushing her. All in all, she's been a faithful companion to me through everything and the day she passes on, I'm not sure how I'll deal!

Ugh, this thread makes me feel sorry for a lot of cats. Seems people get kittens because they're cute without having spent much time around adult cats before.

Funny that this post was suddenly revived. I was about to post my own similar gripe. I've had my cats for 9 years, since they were kittens. One of them has always been more of a handful than the other - likes to scratch the rugs and couch, revenge pees when we go on vacation, and chews the oddest things - pipe behind the toilet, FFS! He is also extremely vocal and meows nonstop in the early morning, begging for food. He's a fatty, so I can't free feed. I have an auto dispenser but he doesn't care to wait for it. He meows after we have already fed him because somehow he forgets that he was fed. This morning he meowed for ten minutes straight at 3am. Spraying him with water only causes him to run out of range and keep meowing. We have a four month old baby who is a TERRIBLE sleeper as it is, and the cat is making things worse, not to mention pissing off DH big time. I am one of those people who think of pets as family and would never have considered giving one away, but I am already so sleep deprived and I just don't know what to do anymore!!!
