Thank you, all who have posted on this thread.

I was considering getting two cats for this new house.

Not anymore! I'm done with that mad idea.

I got a cat 2 months ago and it's been great. None of the things in the thread have happened to me. I have a dog and kids. Everyone has adjusted. The cat has never bitten, or peed/ pooped outside of the litter box. A couple hisses at the beginning. No vomiting, no scratching up furniture. I do vacuum more, change litter frequently, and spend $ on food, but I would say that I'm 100% happy and got exactly what I was looking for from the shelter.

Pot, meet Kettle. Why resurrect a zombie thread just to spew nastiness?

This thread really surprises me. I had no idea cats were so much work and so high maintenance! Maybe its because I grew up on a farm and we had tons of cats (...6 cats) but we kept them outside with all of the other animals because, well, they're animals. They lived very happy and very fulfilling lives chasing birds and bringing the mice that they caught to our doorstep. They were all friends and slept in our barn on the cooler evenings. I was a kid but I think most of them lived for at least 9 years and I thought that was pretty normal, but I was a kid, what do I know. They were so easy! All I did was feed them every morning and play with them throughout the day. My mom took them in for regular vet appointments and thats it. We would ask friends to feed them when we went out of town... just like the other animals. I just don't get why and how cats can be hard?! Maybe let them play outside more and poop outside so you don't have to deal with a litter box. I've never cleaned up cat poop and I always had at least 6 cats at a time as a kid.... they just went in the flower beds, etc. Even now as an adult our family has 2 cats. We DO NOT have a litter box because they are indoor/outdoor cats. They go outside during the day to play and pee. They come back inside in the evening to eat their dinner, snuggle on the couch, and sleep in their kitty beds.

Okay so I recently posted about pet sitting a kitten and was seriously considering getting a cat but now, after reading through this thread, I'm having major second thoughts!

Oh, for god's sake! I have THREE cats and we:
feed cats daily, top up water, clean water fountain dish monthly

clean litter boxes weekly

trim their nails every 2 weeks

brush them sometimes, but not even weekly! Two are short haired, one is long haired

vacuum - um, our cleaner does that every 2 weeks. we might vacuum in between when shedding season happens

take to vet once/year

play with them when we and they want to. For one that's daily, for the others they chase their toys that are around the house but other than that, they are good.

AND THAT'S IT. Cats aren't all hellions.

I personally think a dog is too much work, but others LOVE DOGS, LOVE TO WALK, FEED, TRAIN, DOCTOR, PET, LOVE, PLAY, BRUSH. Personally, having to walk a dog at 11pm in the rain or snow would be horrible. I think cats are the least work with the greatest benefit.

But to say that a few people who are posting anonymously (and it could be 3 people who've posted 10 times each) that cats are horrible means that it's true is bull. I could post enough times to make everyone back away from every puppy in the world.

If everyone would DO THE RESEARCH before getting a pet, we'd all be better off: animals need attention, money spent, cleaning, feeding and care. All animals (kids too, by the way). And older animals need more care, money spent, cleaning (just as elderly people need more care!)

If you aren't ready, don't get a pet, but don't let crazy people make your decisions for you!

I found this thread in hopes of justifying getting rid of my 16-year-old cat. Through no fault of her own (she's just a cat) she has negatively impacted our home. She pees and poops wherever because she is obese, arthritic and old. It's not her fault, but I want a home I can relax in. I realize it's not right to get rid of a living thing because it becomes a gross, stinky, blob incapable of grooming its own anus. However, as a society, we are quite capable of placing ageing parents into old age homes -but we are selfish if we want to do that to our pets.

You can't justify it - it would be cruel and heartless and appalling. Don't you do it.

+1000. Personally, I don't see the appeal in dogs. Talk about a messy time, energy, money suck. My two shelter cats (3 and 7) are an absolute joy and super low maintenance. I seriously don't know what kind of cats you guys have or why they are apparently so awful. In particular, it breaks my heart that so many people despise their older cats.

That's pretty old. Would it not be reasonable to just put her down in this situation?

you know what? if this idiotic thread gives you second thoughts then maybe the cats are better off without you

the people in this forum sure are some raging assh*les. i expect their children always look neat and sound polite, but are torturing animals every chance they get.

I think in a situation like this that it is justified. Put her down and stop feeling guilty.
