Spanish Basketball Team Salutes Their Hosts

I thought the dating thing was a legacy of our miltary's involvement in Asia... stereotypes created by the kind of contact soldiers have had with, er... professionals among the local women.

As another PP mentioned earlier, if something similar was done to offend another ethnicity or race, the outrage would've been much, much bigger.

Yes, Asians have let these things slide, but to their benefit. Since Asians have not been known to "act up" or fight back the way other minorities have, they have assimilated with White culture more and received some benefits for being the gentler group. Many are seen as White. It is hard to have it both ways. Maybe a lot of Asians need to look at the suffering of Blacks, Native Americans, gays in the fight for rights in this country and ask themselves if they would like to join in. We'd love to have you.
It is never too late to start.

You really don't get it do you? Asians are discriminated against every single day. They are usually not considered white, and are often the but of jokes in TV and movies.
Asian women usually have to be guarded when meeting men. Too many men in this country have an Asian Chick Fetish. Most likely because they think the women will be submissive, and cater to the mans every want and need, in and out of bed.

I do get it. Yes there is racism. I have met many a White man who will only date Asian women. That is itself is racist. Yes, they think that the woman will be submissive. Even the chinese girl adoption: adopt one and she will submit and never cause trouble. Opposite of the fear many people have about adopting a Black male.
I still think that Asians are percieved as submissive because they have made that impression. After that comes the stereotypes...

wow talk about blaming the *victim"

No freaking kidding. As far as the white women only who will only date Asian men, what is your point? I know plenty of White women who will only date black men, many black women who will only date black men, black women who will only date white women, and don't forget those who will not date outside of their race at all.

It also isn't as if the Asians said "Oh hell, let me show everyone how submissive I am" Not so much. It is their culture. In a Confucius society women are not held in the same regard as men, and therefore are responsible for the domestic ends of the relationship. Not too much unlike it was when my Grandmothers were having children. Like our mothers generations, things are changing. However the changes are being done with more respect, no bra burnings, or demands.

I think the poster who is placing blame on the victims has a skewed perception.

I am African American, and I have met one Asian co-worker who told me that we (Blacks) cause too much trouble with the race thing. That, he said, was the reason that Blacks will be left behind. I also heard the same thing from a Latino friend.

I think that all minorities need to be thankful that the civil rights leaders made the USA a better place for everyone. They made HUGE sacrifices.

There was suffering at Manzanar. Most Asians in the US immigrated after that. But I still think that the victims of Manzanar were very docile. Yes there were law suits, but White America has had it easy when it comes to Asians' relative passivity.

yeah ... after they rescinded the law in 1965(?) that prevented immigration from Asia for 40 years. I'm not sure what the numbers are for Asian immigration pre & post 1965, but there have been Asians in America since the 1840s, more than 150 years. Why do Americans continue to treat Asians as newcomers?

Probably because the majority are newcomers, opposite of African Americans and Africans.

How do you know they're newcomers and account for the majority? If they don't have accents, do you assume they are also new? Frankly, I didn't know there was immigration from Africa until I moved out to DC about 15 years ago.

Folks, wish we could stop arguing about who has suffered the most from racism and who did the most to bring it on themselves. Not to be Pollyannish about it but let's work to end racism against everybody.

Frankly, I appreciate this discussion. We've managed to keep it a discussion without getting out of control and flaming after several pages of posts. It's interesting for me to hear others' experiences.

I'd take a gander that in the recent generation (past 20-25 years), Asian immigration has seen a spike from South Asia (India).

I do have a problem with immigrants of all races who criticize the situation that many African Americans and Native Americans are in. I knew one young man who told me all kinds of negative things about African Americans. He told me that the US has more opportunity than any other place, and that the poverty was all the fault of African Americans and their laziness. He did not know squat about slavery or Jim Crow. He did not even know about voting restrictions and segregation in the South. If you have an opinion, you should be informed.

I can say that one person in my family lost his life in the Civil Rights movement (indirectly). Those changes open the doors for so many people to immigrate. It made this country a better place for all, including Whites. We got the brightest immigrants from all over the world after the late 60's. It helped to propel this country forward economically. I haven't even touched on the suffering of the Native Americans. That is LONG.

Yes, Asians have experienced discrimination, so that is more of a reason to try not to be part of the problem by not accusing people of laziness. It is sad that sacrifices were made for people who come to this country, and they in turn belittle those who suffered.
