Some lessons on etiquette 1. If you are over 5 yo and know between right and wrong, don't do this (see photo) 2. If you know you're wrong, say you're sorry. If not, then you are digging your grave deeper If this represents the mentality of the Spaniards and Spain cannot understand what they did is wrong, then the 2016 Olympics should not be held there. Spanish press is saying that the Americans are using this incident to strengthen its own position for the 2016 Games to be held in Chicago. This photo represents a country and people (boneheads) stuck in the 1950s if they can't comprehend its implications. http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Spanish-basketball-team-poses-for-offensive-pict?urn=oly,100152 |

Would someone explain to me briefly what is so offensive about this image? I don't see it as any more "offensive" than dressing in Asian garb for a photo. The players didn't think anything of it, nor did the IOC.
Imagine that the situation were reversed, and you had Asian basketball players at an event in the US or Europe photographed making their eyes more "round." Would that be offensive? I for one would laugh at such a photo. (GASP! How insensitive!!!!!!) Lighten up people. |
| What about putting on blackface for a photo? Would you find that offensive? |
| The black face question is irrelevant. I'm asking about this specific Spanish basketball team photo - can someone explain what is so offensive about it? I'm sure it can be done. |
Are you Asian? I am and I find it offensive. Pretending to be another ethnicity by making fun of a characteristic of it is just rude. Yes, I'd be shocked if an Asian team tried to make their eyes more round. |
Oh. Well. In that case, it must be okay. |
The Aisan garb anology does not work, dressing up in ethnic garb could be seen as a celebration of, embracing or respecting the culture (like wearing a headscarf if you go to a muslim country), while imitating a physical trait could be seen as a form of mockery. |
I'm really suprised this needs explanation. Making "slanty-eyes" has never been done in a loving, embracing way. Have you ever watched kids do this on a playground? Wearing clothes can easily be seen as an expression of appreciation for someone's culture... but mocking (or imitating) someone's physical characteristics is just offensive. |
it's not irrelevant. it's just as offensive, so if you consider one offensive then i don't see how you can't consider the other offensive. they both make a mockery of physical traits |
If the vitriol of racism has not been hurled at you, I’m not sure you can understand, but I will give it a try. Growing up as a child of color, one often faces moments like these or hear verbal racial insults from occupants of a car screaming by. The child/teen/adult is randomly told to “go back to your country” even if one was born here and been in the US for multiple generations. Don’t minimize it to schoolyard antics. These incidences scattered throughout one’s vulnerable life profoundly influence the self-esteem, identity and cultural pride. Even adults who had not experienced these events as children, have experienced xenophobia in other forms that such gestures (similar to what the Spanish team did) create a sense of rejection and mockery. A friend joined the State Department and told me that when white Americans are posted to their sites (outside of Europe, Australia, Canada), this is the first time that they feel what it’s like to be a minority. They’re stared at, mocked, followed, face insults, spit on. I hadn’t thought of it that way until she described it with that word – minority. So unless you’ve spent an extended period of time outside of your “native” country, never used your passport, and not a person of color in white America, it will be difficult for you to understand. |
Hey, I have a suggestion for you. Why don't you get some big lipsand a wide nose from the costume store. You can walk around with black features you can laugh your ass off. When people with no sense of humor get pissed off at you, tell them to lighten up. |
I was just thinking of another situation. How about buy a curly wig and strap on a big schnauze and wear the Star of David. Is that funny? |

Europeans are horribly racist and generally ignorant. It is extremely apparant in their complete and total lack of ability to assimilate their immigrants into their countries. They even managed to produce the worst monster in history, Hitler, and the millions looked on with apathy.
Next time you are in Germany bring up the Turks. When visiting France, find out what they think of the Arabs. |
