As for increasing parental involvement in the schools? I doubt it -- PG County is kind of far to make evening meetings.

Uh no. The article talks about this being an issue at Thomson. Most likely, out of town parents drive their kids into the city with them when they go to work. There's nothing implied there about additional involvement.

The article, as you all note, talked about a parent who couldn't get their kid into their "in boundary" school. Clearly, Thomson's not going to go down in enrollment any time soon. The issue, as I see it, is that downtown is no longer deserted. People with kids now live their and want to keep their kids enrolled in schools there. That makes a lot of sense to me.

I'm a parent who couldn't get my kid (in-bounds) to Thomson for PK. It KILLS me that there are MD kids at this school. I want to know why the news isn't investigating this and why MD parents are not in jail. Otherwise, I want you to pay my goddamn DC taxes. And FUCK you for walking about me "whining"

why don't you reach out to the local news. do it in a way that tells a story of the burden you have encounter. take pictures of the cars with MD plates dropping the kids off - THIS is what is needed to make a case. Do it NOW before the school year ends.

Good luck. Try something like 7 on your side.

So much has to be changed before we can see an improvement. Let's be brutally honest, the time table alone almost makes all DCPS employees unwilling accomplises at this charade of registering students.

How does the time table make DCPS employees accomplices? There is a deadline for enrollment. You require the family to produce valid ID. You make no exceptions. You apply oversight via computer tax records. It could be done. Hell a google search will turn up most addresses and their owner. For the renters, Your name should have to be on a notarized copy of your lease. None of this I stay with my grandmother BS.

And what if you do stay with your grandmother? There are plenty of multi generation families in DC, where the deed or lease is in the older generation's name.

You can do one of two things, you can acknowledge that families do live together. Or you can state that they don't that staying with grandma means you don't live anywhere, which would make them homeless, and give them protections under McKenney-Vento. The latter would mean that, even if they move to MD they can legally keep their children at DC schools.

Simply demand a paystub that shows dc taxes paid. Who cares where you live, I want to know where you pay taxes. Lease, deed, live with grandma, no good. Paystub. If someone does not work, then 1099 from their investments, address for welfare/Social Security payments, whatever.

Again, stop whining Marge Simpson! PS/PK is not guaranteed to anyone, inbound or otherwise. You come across as a bitter, miserable a$$hole! So now you want people to go to jail because your little rugrat did not get into preschool! Hey, I have an idea, get off your entitled a$$, and pay for daycare, or apply at several schools like the rest of us! I hate when people get all up on their damn pedestals when things don't go their way, and they are probably getting jobs and entering schools based on associations, cheating on their taxes, etc. I am no way condoning the situation, but get over it!

What's your number on the waitlist?? Let's start there, you go through all of that, and your child still does not get in, you will REALLy be pissed then!

When we reenrolled in our neighborhood DCPS school, the office staff only checked the address on my DC driver's license. No other residency confirmation was made.

...do you realize how easy it is to change a w4? that won't solve anything! Let's be honest, if I had a rental home in DC or relative in DC, and was fortunate to get into a charter or an excellent DCPS school, I would just change my W4, and pay DC taxes...still would not have to leave in DC--I dont know the answer, but until someone in power really cares, it is, what it is!

If you have a rental home in DC and change your W4 to pay DC taxes, then I don't give a damn where you live (or leave). If you pay DC income tax, welcome to DC schools. If you are silly enough to pay DC income tax but live in MD, that is your problem. But, this has to be the kind of thing that gets checked at the beginning of school and can be subject to re-checking at anytime.

Not silly, maybe I want the 5br house in MD, and the DC schools!! Feel free to check my paystub anytime.....

DC taxes withheld on a paystub does not mean you pay DC taxes. File a DC tax return and get a refund, no problem.

they are suppose to have 2 items to check. can I ask which school? I gave a liscense and pay-stub and since my paystub did not have my address on it, it did not qualitfy and they had me come in with another item for approved residency. (this was for re-enrollment)

They ask for two ONLY if you do not have a paystub with DC taxes withheld..

I just provided my enrollment packet today including the residency form. The registrar seemed to follow all requirements.

Feel sorry for the would be Thomson parent/student. Pretty sure that happened last year. I know of two D.C families whose children didn't get in. This year I have seen lots of kids with some kind of connection to Maryland coming to school!
