DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| This is really an outrage, and for some years DCPS has been unable, or unwilling, to address it. The taxpayers are getting the shaft (at a time when DC councilmembers want to raise taxes). So are DC school kids, especially the ones who live out of bounds for sought-after public schools and aren't successful in the lottery. |
| Yes, it is terrible. So many DC families pay for their kids to go to public schools in VA + MD. DC needs to finally get efficient. How can it do such a great job at giving parking tickets on the one hand and is so inept at doing anything else. It is unfair to DC families who pay taxes here that there are no spots for their kids at DC publics. I know there is a lot of cheating in PG county -- the DC schools are considered better than those in PG...so lots of folks use false addresses. |
| There are only two people in the whole city who are responsible for following up on this. They don't even have a way to collect back tuition. |
Two full time people working year round? I'd like to know what they are doing that they can't follow up on this. Give me an 8 hour day and a public records database, I'd be sure to be able to come up with something. Geez, what are these people doing with their time? |
|
this is ridiculous.
Presumably we should contact the mayor about this?? Since he took over the schools? Will outrage work? |

Looks like the State Board of Education creates the rules for residency verification.

It is also an issue of messaging from the administration. A friend called the other day to see what the process is if they move after they enroll. They have a child who would be entering preK. They were told - after they prove residency, it is done. It does not matter is they move to MoCo in June if they had already provided all the paperwork to enroll their child.
So when the central office is telling people it is ok - there is a big problem. |
Yes, this is absolutely true. I know a family that was in DC and got the free Pre-K, and moved to Arlington in April (of 2008). They continued the free Pre-K through the rest of the academic year, and the switched to Arlington schools for K. |
| That was 2008. I forgot that 8 followed by the closed parenthesis makes the "cool" icon. |
| Good luck in making this an issue. This has been going on for years and when the office had twice the staff, it was still a futile effort. In all honesty, it doesn't take a division within DCPS to disclose the culprits. All that is needed is an investigative news team during sweep week and watch the scampering commence. Hey!!!! Fox-news, the month of May is just days away and I think sweep-week is about to begin. Let's get it cracking. |
The family I was referring to is planning on moving over the summer. So they will register in PreK with their DC residence before they move and get the entire year for free. AND DC Schools told them it was OK! |
I was for some odd reason sent to the investigator's office because my child said "I stay near Six Flags." I was outraged once I received the paperwork asking me to submit in person the residency information to central office. The office is official and wanted every last piece of information they asked for. I was more upset that there as no questioning directed towards me about this matter from the school. I had to take off from work and give them the info that I gave to the school in August. By the way, my daughter was mentioning her aunt's brand new home that she was excited about especially since it was very close to Six Flags. She has been begging me to get one near her so that we could take advantage of the amusement park. |
| I guess when they say from a child's mouth.... |
|
Well. Anyone who has relative in the district could produce
a driver's license and a bank statement with the DC address. You only need two lame pieces of ID that could easily be obtained fraudulently to satisfy the requirement. That's the problem; it's too easy. I know of a black family in our 20016 neighborhood who had a teacher randomly show up at her home on the pretense of not being able to to reach her "live" to tell her that she was cancelling a parent teacher meeting with her. The teacher had left messages on their message machine but then the teacher just showed up at the family's door on the Monday of the Columbus Day holiday It was based on nothing other than the child's race. There are abuses on both sides. |
