The Bethesda police chief said it was rape.

The Washington Post and NBC4.

Is sexual assault always rape?

No, it can mean a lot of things.

Here is the definition:

I park there fairly often and rarely see more than a couple of people there at most. Maybe other times of the day it's more crowded, but I doubt there are nearly as many people as would be on the street.

They entered through the front door. It was on the news.

Yes I just listened to it. They did not release many more details other than the employees did leave the store and set the alarm at 9:45pm and came back about 10:05pm. They believe the men came in and out of the front door. The one victim was beaten to death but autopsy results are not public yet. There is a reward for $136k for information. At no point did the cheif say that rape occurred. Both victims were beaten and sexually assaulted. They are being very careful about the information given to the public.

Most of the time, when the news says sexually assaulted, it means rape. Did you not read the definition posted, it includes rape.

As for those you wondering why this is getting so much discussion as opposed to the other homicides that happen, it's because most of the people on DCUM can't relate to drug/gang related homicides. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

The story does not add up...the fact that one forgot something and the other had to home back and the two men were there does not make sense. They have not given any details on the survivor and I think it is because she is a suspect. I also think that if the suspects murdered one employee why not the other... Does nit make sense. Who knows to throw off the cops the one females boyfriend could have beat her up and we do not know what the sexual assault entails bit when ppl are desperate they do anything. Its terrible but true! in any case a terrible situation

YOU ARE AN ***HOLE FOR WONDERING THIS ON A PUBLIC INTERNET BOARD.

It is a valid thought to be considered....no need for calling this person names.

I disagree. The person who posted this is an asshole. I can't even imagine why someone would post something so hurtful about the victim of an awful crime.

That does not mean rape though...they have not disclosed that detail so why say it if its not the case? Just wait for them to release the pertinent and correct details.

I hope the reward leads to someone snitching on the perpetrators. That may be the only way to bring them in, without any other identifying information.

I think it was an inside job. I can't imagine how two men in masks and gloves could get past the crowds in downtown Bethesda on a Friday night and walk into a closed store without being seen.

I think it was a crime of chance, how could it be an inside job when the women closed up the store, left for the night, and had to return for something forgotten, no one could have known they were going back. They probably weren't walking down the streets in masks, just pulled them on at the last second. Jayna was a great girl I know myself and many others will miss her. I hope they catch these disgusting animals that did this.

a lot seems weird though.

why the brutal killing of one but not the other? if you are going to kill someone with a hammer and a boxcutter, why would you hesitate about leaving a witness? whole thing is disgusting.

Honestly its terrible that you would suggest something like this. Go get a hobby. Police NEVER release the name of a person who is a VICTIM of sexual assault. Both were sexually assaulted. Both were beaten. One died. Please get a hobby and leave this poor woman alone. She has already been though enough.

I second that, you really are.

I don't think they will post the name of the surviving victim because the assailants are still at large. It is a safety issue for her.
