Similar situation.. My DC picked UMD over Michigan and GTech. Didn’t make sense to spend extra money for a slightly higher ranking..
People forget that Michigan and UVA accept lower stats students from instate. Going to an out of state flagship for some perceived prestige based on rankings doesn’t justify the dollars. But yes some people will spend a ton for the sake of prestige. |
It's not just about prestige... Michigan and GTech are much stronger academically and have better job prospects & resources than UMD. Ross at Michigan and CS/Engineering at GTech for example. The difference isn't huge, but it for sure is noticeable and the reason why most would pick Michigan and GTech over UMD. |
You are an idiot. It is absolutely strong by any standard. I assure you that employers (such as the engineering company I work for) regard it as a strong program. |
pomona. |
Nah not buying that. They’re all big state U’s. |

Preferring the beach to the mountains? Sorry, that's one bizarre reason for picking CNU over UVA. Wow - you picked one sentence out of a paragraph. No mention of the size. No mention of the vibe. And plenty of kids pick a school based on geography; he would not go north of Richmond. You do you though. |
Students from area private school, including DC who were accepted UVA and selected elsewhere: Princeton (did not get Echols but were hooked for Pton) Penn (got Rodman at UVA) Georgetown (Got Echols at UVA) Berkeley UNC x 2 students (one got Echols one did not, & was a Morehead-Cain finalist) |
That applied to one red X at kid's school and everyone asked the counseling dean. All they would say is that there were clear reasons and the counselors were not at all surprised. |
| Only applied because I insisted, picked VT, go Hokies I guess. |
|
Keep in mind that a lot of "lower stats" students are just kids who: Didn't have any paid math or ELA tutoring Didn't have paid SAT prep Didn't take the SATs multiple times May still believe that SATs measure what you know Don't have parents monitoring their apps |
| Mine accepted UVA, along with a few other big public and couple private (ohio State, UMD, UIUc, Penn state, CWRU etc), chose Purdue. Engineering |
+1 People like the PP are toxic. |
The PP is correct. No one is touting UVA as a "strong engineering school." |
+1 I insisted mine apply to UVA and W&M even though DC made it very clear he had no interest in either and VT was his top choice. Got into all three and is a very happy Hokie. Not a STEM major. |
