Declining UVA

My kid didn't even bother applying; it's not for everyone, even if they have a chance at getting in.

What a bizarre decision, sorry.

You’re a jerk, sorry. DP

Preferring the beach to the mountains? Sorry, that's one bizarre reason for picking CNU over UVA.

That’s your opinion.

It’s ridiculous. That’s what it is. Who turns down one of the top universities in the country in favor of a no name school based on proximity to Virginia Beach?

DP. Some people like BMWs and some people like Toyotas. They both get you to your destination.

Holy smokes. In all honesty, step back for a minute and try to understand that your posts are the type that make UVA look bad. Seriously.

Thought school mascot was weird.

I'm a grad and I find this truly funny!

Can’t justify the cost.

I just don’t buy it. If he didn’t care that UVA is a much better school and wanted a school near the beach he wouldn’t even have bothered applying. He would have known he’s a shoo-in the CNU.

He didn’t turn down UVA for CNU. It didn’t happen.

DP. This is a bizarre take. Lots of Virginia kids apply widely throughout the state just to see where they’ll get in. What they feel/think in November isn’t necessarily what they’ll feel/think when all their options are on the table in April and they have to really think about what it’s actually going to be like at this place or that.

THIS is why people think UVA grads are such douches.
That they went to UVA is the first thing you learn about them . . . as if anyone cares.

FYI, my DC turned down a top 15 school in the NE for a small VA school, akin to CNU. Part was costs (we COULD have paid the big bill but DC chose to grad debt free with money for grad school). Part was location. Part was feel of the campus/vibe. On paper, the choice looks crazy but, in reality, it was the perfect decision and DC is thriving.

Not everyone is a wanna-be striver, PP.

I didn’t go to UVA and I think choosing CNU over UVA is weird and questionable. It’s the kind of thing people say when their kid didn’t actually get into UVA “oh yeah he just preferred the vastly inferior school, he liked the vibe better.” Uh huh.

I need about 4 hands to count the number of kids who went to "top schools" and who left (several from PENN, Tufts, BU, Boston College, to name a few recent ones). Vibe and fit . . . you can sneer but it does matter.

And dicks like you calling other schools "vastly inferior" make the point. Besides being rude af and not understanding that undergrad really doesn't matter for 95% of the kids, I would not want my kids in a university full of such snobby, egotistical jerks like you. Honestly, there is nothing about your post that was necessary, kind, or helpful. And that "vibe" comes through on some campuses.

My child got into a top school in the NE and did not even apply to UVA b/c of the attitude and douche level (my words not DC's) of their grads that she knows (with only a few exceptions).

DC is in at UVA this year. But if ND is an option (waiting on RD outcome this week) that may be first choice. Was deferred at Princeton EA and that would be the only other school they would pick over ND.

The kids I know who went elsewhere chose UCLA, Michigan and UGA. Fit matters.

The average GPA at CNU is about 1200 with an acceptance rate over 80%. If your kid got into UVA, then your kid isn't a big fish in a little pond, your kid is a whale in a fishtank. This does seem a little bit unusual.

NP and I've never been to CNU so I don't know the vibe. My kid decided not to apply to UVA so I shouldn't even be responding. But for this kid here, it could be about fit. My senior will be attending a small OOS school you haven't heard of with a very high acceptance rate. When we were on the tour his junior year, I remember looking at him during the tour and realizing how it was the perfect place and he fit right in. It was like he finally found his people. So who knows, maybe this kid just loved CNU for whatever reason. Some don't care about prestige or rankings.

I would 100% pick ND over UVA too! Good luck to your child!

(Having said that, even as an ND alum, I totally recognize that it's not the right fit for everyone and would never begrudge anyone who picked another school.)

Not familiar with CNU. Just looked it up, are you referring to Christopher Newport University?
