Declining UVA

He is thriving at CNU and (from my biased view) is a big fish there. He made a great decision. He also wants to be closer to the beach than the mountains.

What a bizarre decision, sorry.

OOS kids will have faced tougher admit standards and will have been admitted to many excellent college. For them, UVA isn't the same financial bargain so they'll go just about anywhere.

Exactly, same for UNC. Mine was a Jefferson nominee admitted, but did not receive scholarship. Made no sense to pay full tuition with UNC being a relative bargain. Chose an Ivy in the end.

Thought school mascot was weird.

Admitted students days are so important for this reason! Glad she is happy at her school!

I mean, it's not rocket science. I'd never send a kid to UVA over UNC in state. That would be nuts.

This is basically it for my OOS kid this year. Admitted EA to UVA and Michigan and prefers Michigan. Still waiting on a couple of other decisions but already declined UVA.

Yet you won't name the school? Not helpful to OP in the slightest.

DP here. The above was our DC too. Chose W&M.

For their MSc they made sure to choose a university in a city. DC wasnt ready for a city as college freshman. Everything has its right time. Trust their gut instinct.

Their kid's reason for finding the other school a better fit doesn't translate to OP's kid, though.

These are teachable moments. We have to encourage kids to do their research and make the choice based on the factors that are most important to them. Why other people chose a school is irrelevant. It has to work for your kid, your budget, etc.

If your kid got rejected - a lot of kids high stat kid got rejected. Might be for yield or too many from the same HS or too many from NoVa. They can't take 100% or the TJ applicants - check the other thread. TJ is already at top 3-5% of the populous area.

Look for a path forward. UVA Wise path is one. No personal experience but as a parent - this lets me sleep at night knowing the option exists.

And the UVA haters are storming it with theirs.

Same story, different day.

For some kids attending UVA is a lifelong dream, for some kids it is a target and for others a safety.

Kids apply to a number of schools, and in most cases get acceptances from more than one school but in the end can only attend one school. So yield won’t be 100%.

Fit matters and believe it or not UVA may not be the best fit for everyone.

Nice subtle dig. UVA isn't a "safety" for any kid, almost by definition.
