And it isn't just in the roofing industry. So many other industries used to provide a middle class working wage to people with strong unions, health insurance, and worker protections. By allowing undocumented workers to be exploited it harms everyone- both the undocumented groups and the legal working class. Wages are driven down for EVERYONE. Safety protections gone for EVERYONE. This system only benefits the wealthy from both Republican and Democratic parties. I just don't understand how Democrats support it. If there were not a massive amount of undocumented workers then wages would increase. And if legal residents and citizens didn't take the job then immigrants could legally be brought in to do the jobs. Employers would be forced to pay a decent wage and workers would not be afraid to speak up about wage theft and unsafe conditions. We are back to Upton Sinclair's the Jungle. “So long as we have wage slavery," answered Schliemann, "it matters not in the least how debasing and repulsive a task may be, it is easy to find people to perform it. But just as soon as labor is set free, then the price of such work will begin to rise. So one by one the old, dingy, and unsanitary factories will come down...and so the dangerous trades will be made safe, or substitutes will be found for their products" The conditions he described are conditions that still exist today. |
I’m a dem and agree with some of what you’re saying but the way to deal with this is to punish people for using this labor. It’s not doing a series of ICE raids in a different random, dem led city every couple of months. I actually think a lot these undesirable jobs that they are doing could easily be done by ex cons. |

| I had two violently abusive boyfriends who were immigrants. |
Wow, talk about making poor choices. Couldn't you have found any violently abusive boyfriends who were born in the US? |
Seriously. There’s no shortage of violently abusive red-blooded American boyfriends. |
If true, YOU are the common factor, not the immigrant boyfriends. I have had many foreign-born boyfriends and zero abusive boyfriends of any nationality/status. Seek help if you've have two or more "violently abusive" boyfriends. It is a pattern. |
Stop looking for men at the bar. |
Who wants an ex con working at their house? |
I had one of those too. He was Canadian |
I don't know what is your definition of "hurt", but our public school was overwhelmed and a lot of resources was thrown to ESL classes that should be used to raise teacher's salaries. Class sized are significantly increased. In addition, every time I have to take my elderly parent to Inova emergency room at night, the waiting room is filled up with primarily latin americans. Again, I was not 'hurt", but our waiting period was hours before my mom could be seen by the doctor. I went there in January again at 11 pm, and there was only one person sitting in the waiting room (and this is in the middle of the flu season). I do have more positive experience with the neighbors (we live in very diverse neighborhood) and colleagues (I worked with people from 40+ different countries), and I am an immigrant myself. But those all are legal immigrants. |
I met one in the library. |
So, your logic if I or my children were not affected by wrongdoing of Epstein and Co, then we should allow them to operate in our country? Who cared that the children that were abused are from another country, as long as it does not affect me personally. |
