Who do you think did roofing in Maine before wealthy unscrupulous contractors brought in people willing to work in unsafe conditions? There are absolutely Americans and legal immigrants willing to do roofing when they are paid a living wage AND they work in safe conditions.

Bringing in crews of undocumented workers who are made to work in unsafe conditions and drive down wages are awful for everyone.

"Working by Headlights": Although OSHA requires 5 foot-candles of light, many crews are reported to be working in the dark using only truck headlights or small personal headlamps. This creates deep shadows and "blind spots" where a worker can easily miss the edge of the roof or a trip hazard.

The Fall Protection Gap: Roofers have the highest rate of fatal falls in construction. In Maine, advocates have documented cases of workers falling 15+ feet and breaking bones because they weren't provided with harnesses, or because the harnesses they had were old and poorly maintained.

The Threat of Enforcement: The most significant "safety violation" isn't a lack of a harness—it's intimidation. There are documented instances in Maine of employers threatening to call ICE or Border Patrol if an injured worker tries to file for Workers' Compensation or reports a safety hazard. This system only benefits the wealthy from both Republican and Democratic parties. I just don't understand how Democrats support it. If there were not a massive amount of undocumented workers then wages would increase. And if legal residents and citizens didn't take the job then immigrants could legally be brought in to do the jobs. Employers would be forced to pay a decent wage and workers would not be afraid to speak up about wage theft and unsafe conditions.

But just as soon as labor is set free, then the price of such work will begin to rise. I’m a dem and agree with some of what you’re saying but the way to deal with this is to punish people for using this labor. It’s not doing a series of ICE raids in a different random, dem led city every couple of months. I actually think a lot these undesirable jobs that they are doing could easily be done by ex cons.

I don't know what is your definition of "hurt", but our public school was overwhelmed and a lot of resources was thrown to ESL classes that should be used to raise teacher's salaries. Class sized are significantly increased. In addition, every time I have to take my elderly parent to Inova emergency room at night, the waiting room is filled up with primarily latin americans. Again, I was not 'hurt", but our waiting period was hours before my mom could be seen by the doctor. I went there in January again at 11 pm, and there was only one person sitting in the waiting room (and this is in the middle of the flu season).

I do have more positive experience with the neighbors (we live in very diverse neighborhood) and colleagues (I worked with people from 40+ different countries), and I am an immigrant myself. But those all are legal immigrants.

So, your logic if I or my children were not affected by wrongdoing of Epstein and Co, then we should allow them to operate in our country? Who cared that the children that were abused are from another country, as long as it does not affect me personally.
