Has an immigrant ever hurt you personally?

Strongly in favor of immigration and have had mostly positive experiences, but have had two significant negatives:

1. Car accident caused by immigrants driving very recklessly (passing on the shoulder at speed). No ID, no insurance, reeking of weed.

2. Fully 25% of my kid’s 1st grade class spoke virtually no English. Teacher flatly told us that 80% of her time was occupied by trying to get them up to speed, so she had no time for other kids’ needs.

Many, many more positives than negatives with immigrants, but think we should be honest about the need to dramatically overhaul the system. Unfortunately and as usual, Trump doing it in the very worst way possible.

I have never heard of putting children who don’t speak the language into a regular classroom. Schools have ESL classes.

Not at our elementary 7-8 years ago.

I’m literally repeating what the teacher told us verbatim.

No axe to grind. Believe immigration generally a positive, but have also seen some of the negatives.

What negatives?

You think all Americans are perfect??? 1/3 of this country supports PEDOPHILES and CON MEN and Criminal Triators!

Your caps lock is stuck.

Looks like they got it unstuck just fine.

I was supposed to be valedictorian of my high school but a gang of immigrants and immigrants' children swarmed in and got higher grades.

I was supposed to respect American Elites, but the immigrants look so much smarter.

This actually kinda happened.

Years ago, I used to work with this white guy who lived in an expensive neighborhood. He had a 16 yr old who was a pretty smart kid. The guy told me that Asian people started moving into the neighborhood and school, and the curve in the HS started going up, and his DC was having a hard time keeping up.

I'm Asian American. He said that as a compliment. I know that he and my boss thought I was smart. LOL

And he's wasn't wrong. This was happening in other well to do towns in that area.

The country would be way better off if we could deport violent maga and keep the hardworking undocumented workers.

Amen!

Nah, not a complement. Just not very smart.

How many have you taken to live with you in your house, personally?

I took one. I married her.

Well there's one! Only 10+ million illegal aliens to go.

Are you bringing in any of those 10+ million into your house to support, personally?

Not necessary. Immigrants are some of the hardest working people in the country. They’re the ones installing roofs and landscaping in 100 degree weather in the summer. Cleaning other people’s toilets, working in hot humid kitchens in restaurants. They’re perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. They contribute to the economy and they pay taxes. Sorry Fox News tells you otherwise.

They commit traffic violations all the time. I got rear ended and thankfully was not that hurt. My cousin was hit by an undocumented driver that was so drunk that after completely collapsing the back of her car he didn’t even realize what happened.

An immigrant broke my heart when I was 24. But a couple of white guys broke my heart in the years after that, so maybe it’s a wash?

Are those kids US citizens? Speaking Spanish is not illegal

Didn’t mention Spanish—you jumped to conclusions.

As it happens, this was an area with large numbers of temporary immigrant workers. Possible that some of the kids were citizens but not likely given the short duration of the parents’ residency.

What language did 25% of the kids speak? Not Spanish? Where do you live?

Obama started the program for young people who were brought here as children under the age of 16 years old. DACA or Dreamers needed to be vetted, could not have committed any crimes, needed to graduate high school and then college or a job and check in every three years I think. A good portion of American born kids would not be admitted into the program because they have arrests or drop outs, or unemployment. DACA recipients cannot have that.

Trump gutted the program and ended any new applications. He destroyed it just like he destroys anything successful another president did.

ICE took some illegal immigrants from a Maine construction site. Roofers that were working at 7 am at below zero temperatures. There aren’t any Americans in that area who will do the job so the houses that were being built will probably sit there unfinished for who knows how long.

According to the Maine newspaper there was a group of about 30 Ecuadorians who went to Maine to work from Massachusetts. Besides roofers they also jailed farm hands.

Why are so many Americans fine with undocumented migrants being exploited and legal migrants and citizens being put out of work? Who do you think did roofing in Maine before wealthy unscrupulous contractors brought in people willing to work in unsafe conditions? There are absolutely Americans and legal immigrants willing to do roofing when they are paid a living wage AND they work in safe conditions.

Roofing is one of the most dangerous jobs. In 2023 over 100 roofers died on the job. There are many legal requirements that are supposed to be followed so workers aren't injured or killed. Bringing in crews of undocumented workers who are made to work in unsafe conditions and drive down wages are awful for everyone.

Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) highlight several ways bosses are currently cutting corners with migrant crews in Maine:

"Working by Headlights": Although OSHA requires 5 foot-candles of light, many crews are reported to be working in the dark using only truck headlights or small personal headlamps. This creates deep shadows and "blind spots" where a worker can easily miss the edge of the roof or a trip hazard.

The Fall Protection Gap: Roofers have the highest rate of fatal falls in construction. In Maine, advocates have documented cases of workers falling 15+ feet and breaking bones because they weren't provided with harnesses, or because the harnesses they had were old and poorly maintained.

The Threat of Enforcement: The most significant "safety violation" isn't a lack of a harness—it's intimidation. There are documented instances in Maine of employers threatening to call ICE or Border Patrol if an injured worker tries to file for Workers' Compensation or reports a safety hazard. This creates a "culture of silence" where workers are too afraid to demand the gear they need.

Subcontractor "Shielding": Many large roofing companies hire smaller "subcontractor" crews (often of 5–10 migrant men). This allows the main company to claim they aren't responsible for the safety violations of the "independent" crew, even though they are profiting from the work.

Major Red Flags Currently Seen in Maine

If you are observing a roofing site, these are the most common OSHA violations currently reported with migrant crews:

No Fall Protection: Workers walking on a 2-story roof with no ropes or guardrails.

Ladder Safety: Ladders not extended 3 feet above the roof line or not secured at the top.

Frost Hazards: Crews being forced to work at 6:00 AM when the roof is still covered in "black ice" or morning frost.

PPE Deficits: Workers wearing sneakers instead of slip-resistant work boots, or lacking hard hats in "drop zones" where bundles of shingles are being hoisted.

So you keep telling us. But have YOU specifically had this happen to you.

so im NOT in tech but am in law--- the immigrants I know are just miles better attorneys than the competition. I have been in a position to see women get passed over b/c they were women and have also seen white dudes who thought they were going to get something getting sidelined by immigrants and but from the outside looking at the situation- the brown hire was just a better fit and in a world when being brown would've hurt you, yes, the white guy would've gotten the job but in a world where merit counts, the right person was hired so I could see those white guys feeling like "hey- that was MY job and this brown person took it" but objectively the Latin/indian/ME dude was more experienced & had better credentials.

yuo- I was one of those kids- I was born right here in Waarshington DC and I only spoke Urdu and had to go to esol when I went to school back in the 80s. I am now trilingual and thats if you dont count latin.. I think it's kind aborigine tacky to only speak one language-- even British people who were educated could at least READ French. its such a tacky anglophone thing and if it cant be helped fine but if you are in position to have your kids learn another language and be native speakers of English, why wouldn't you???
