Outrageously hotel prices

Even if they had 100% certainty that an unheard-of hotel was just as good/better, they need name recognition to gain respect from peers. Obviously not everybody, but easily enough for the brag-worthy hotels to benefit from jacking up prices.
That’s not accurate in fact once one hotel overcharges they all follow suit. The algorithms guarantee that they’re priced to perfection. In fact there was an article a couple of years ago detailing how it’s more advantageous for high end hotels to have empty inventory than to lower their prices.

The Residence Inn in Charlottesville was $750 a night for a one bedroom suite (we are a family of 4) last year!

NP here, I believe it. My nephew got surgery at UVA in fall 2020 and I paid for my sister to stay there for 3 nights so they could have a kitchen and space and be close to the hospital. It was $700 a night for the 2 bedroom suite there. There was not a football game that weekend (in fact I am not even sure they were having classes in person). So that is 5.5 years ago.

There’s a Fairfield inn on rt 29 that is 2 miles away from the hospital that is much cheaper. You would have to drive though. People don’t like to make compromises.

I stayed at the Omni in a suite this summer. It was not that expensive. $700 for 2 nights at the 4th of July.

If I’m going on vacation, I want a resort, not a hotel. Restaurants and spa on site. Poolside service. I will pay for this. If it’s just a trip, then a hotel is fine

I literally came on this forum to post this same thing. My husband and I have the chance to get away this weekend last minute. I get that it's Valentines Day and President's Day, but still - was not expecting hotel costs around $2k a night. That is absolute insanity. I was disappointed when we stayed at Salamander last year. The $1k a night rate was already bonkers enough, but there's not nearly enough to do in these places to justify these rates.

What am I missing?? I need to come up with another option asap.

WOW was going to suggest the JW Marco island, but their regular rooms are $1400 a night. At Christmas and spring break they are only $1000, and not worth it.

The Keswick is only $1000 a night.

Weather looks good in Ft Lauderdale. Not sure about flights but try the delray grande.

Just checked 13-15. Salamander Deluxe is 575 per night. Most expensive suite is 1500. Suite is 750.

I don't know. What hotel are you seeing $2k a night?

We do not see prices like that. We see more like $100-$200/night depending on brand and location.

100-200/night doesn't even exist in the middle of nowhere. Obviously location dependent, but even places like Lancaster PA for a soccer tournament were 220+ for your budget hotel. Crazy!

So wrong. Open google maps and look in the MD and VA suburbs within 20 miles of DC. 90% of hotels are 100-200 a night.

Picking off peak times/days of the week will of course be cheaper. It's more about the surge pricing and 90% are absolutely not 100-200/night.

PP:
Greenbrier: $2400 a night
Nemacolin: $1850 a night
Keswick: $1300 a night

The Salamander stay I'm referencing was last October, and the room was $1100 a night.

Problem with Keswick is that the resort doesn't seem to have much more to do than golf! But plus, I guess, is the proximity to Charlottesville? Nemacolin has more to do, but am I really going to do a dog sled or shooting with my husband? Even the pools seem dumb - not like I'm going to go swimming without my kids forcing me too.

Ugh. Really want to take advantage of in laws watching my kids, but I cannot stomach the idea of dropping that much money on a hotel room. I suggested a local stay to my husband, but he doesn't want to stay in DC. Any hidden gems out there I'm missing with 3 hour drive?

Williamsburg Inn but you can’t check in until Sunday.

This is a terrible weekend to get away. Pick a weekend that’s not V-Day with a Monday holiday!

Op here yes this is what I’m seeing. If I’m paying that much a night it should involve a luau or passport. No way I’m paying the price of a mortgage payment to sit in a hotel for a few days.

Yes, I know! Unfortunately, this is the only weekend we don't have a million sports commitments (and the only weekend we have grandparent support!)

I'm leaning toward something like the Kimpton in Charlottesville, where we can get a big suite for $575 (seems like a steal at this point!)
There enough to do in Charlottesville during a chilly weekend?
